“Mom’s Rebellion”
Written by Sherry Balfanz, Glen Cove Correspondent
In our house (we), mom and dad
are up and stirring before the sun
comes up. Dad prepares for work -
mom prepares for the verbal on-
slaught.
The first wake-up call is issued -
"Debra! Marc! Mike! Rise and
shine.” Answer - muffled mumbles
issued from beneath pillows.
Mom spins and hurries toward
the door as she hears those old
faithful words, "Gotta run hun”. She
catches a coffee smear on the cheek
as she waves at a streak that leaves
the words, “See ya this evening”,
hanging in the air.
With a deep sigh and the thought,
“one down, three to go", she
retraces her steps to the bedroom
doors - "Debra! Marc! Mike! I want
to hear those feet hit the floor”.
Answer - thump, thump, thump,
thump, whop - that last answer
merited investigation. She finds a
huddled form still in bed with the
covers over his head. Slowly a hand

extends, wraps itself around the
edge of the covers and with a quick
jerk - mom removes the covers.
Laying there, snuggled against a
shoe is the eldest son - one eye pops
open and a grin, says, "Didn’t fool
ya, huh?"
“Get out of that bed.”
The ultimate warning is issued -
“You guys better hurry up or you’ll
miss the bus.”
“Mom, we’ve still got an hour and
a half.”
“That’s what I said, If you don’t
hurry it up you'll miss the bus."
The verbal exchange at our house
is one that will never be realized on
television - T.V. families are too
perfect. The real life drama of what
actually happens on a school morn
ing is ‘R’ rated.
"Mom, have you seen my socks?”
“No. I don’t wear them."
"Mom, will you finish putting on
the toast? I have to finish this
chapter”.
"No, you had all weekend to read
it finish it on the bus.”
“But Mom, Ray’s bringing that
new X-Solo-Z Dixie model this
morning on the bus ”
“That’s nice, by the time every
one is through looking over Ray’s
model, you’ll be through with the
chapter."
“Oh shoot! That means I’ll have to
wait til lunch to see it."
"Mom, Marc just slammed the
door on the cat's tail.”
“Ok! I’m sorry cat."
"Mom, have you seen my belt?”
"i think I saw it last night

Fast Steak
The day is coming when Ameri-
cans — notorious for their love of a
tender steak — can order a custom-
made tenderloin from a combirta-
tion of meats such as ribeye, sirloin
and even pork roast. Made possible
by a process called co-extrusion,
the technique is already being used
by some fast food restaurants which
offer ‘‘ribs’ or steak fingers made
from a combination of meats.

pole.”
"Oh yeah!”
A ruckus develops in the boys’
room
“So you did hide it!" "No I didn't."
“Now give it to me. 1 wanna wear
it."
"But you’re already dressed.”
"So what!" "I can change fast."
"But I wanna wear it”. “Yeah,
that’s why you hid it”. “Give it
here!"
"No!"
"Mom!"
"Knock it off both of you.” “Now,
what's going on?" "One at a
time ..."
"He hid my shirt so 1 couldn’t and
then he found it so he could and I
wanna wear it and he won't let me
have it."
"Is that what happened?"
“Well, it accidentally got on my
bed under my pillow and since he
was already dressed, I thought I’d
wear it.”
"Well, since it was an accident.
I'm sure you won’t mind swapping
him the shirt • will your
"No mam, I guess I could do
that."
It doesn't pay to have two boys
who wear the same size shirts.
“Hey Mother!" "The boys used
my hair brush and now I can't find
it.”
"Boys, where’s her brush?"
"It's on the washing machine."
"No it's not."
“Ok, It's probably on the clothes
hamper."
“How'd all these stickers get in
my brush?”
“Oh, I used it to brush out my
shoe strings."
"Mother!"
"The bus is coming up the road.”
“Bye, see ya after school.”
One thing about school mornings
it’s never dull. The peace and
tranquility that closes in around you
afterwards makes it all worth while
or at least until the dog barks
directly behind you and shatters the
moment like a piece of glass.
. “Ok. get outside.”
