Chairman Mack Wallace
and Commissioner Jim Nu-
gent directed the continu-
ance of the top production
allowable after reviewing
oil companies' nominations
to buy a total of 2,346,151
barrels of Texas oil per
day. The March nomina-
tion total, a decrease of
32,268 barrels daily when
compared to February pur-
chaser nominations, indi-
cates market demand.
March 1983 nominations
totaled 2,449,999 barrels
daily.
Although next month's
state total for the permis-
sible rate of production is
calculated to average 2,-
832,155 barrels per day,
actual production is esti-
mated to reach 2.3 million
barrels per day. Actual
production in March 1983
was 2,360,385 barrels of oil
per day.
The Commission first
went to the ceiling level for
oil production in April
1972, and March marks the
85th month in a row for the
maximum allowable. It ap-
plies to all fields in the
.
m
plants, broadcast one-half
cup of 8-8-8 fertilizer, or an
equivalent, around each
bush, but at least 12 inches
from the trunk. Work the
fertilizer into the top inch
of soil and water thorough-
ly. On sandy or infertile
soil, fertilize every three to
four weeks.
Janne recommends
keeping several inches of
mulch of sawdust, wood
chips or peat moss around
the plants. And, to control
blackspot, a fungus dis-
ease, spray plants every
week during the summer
with benlate, manzate or

Get Roses
Ready For 19841
COLLEGE STATION:
With a little "tender loving
care", rose plants will pro
vide plenty of beautiful
blooms during 1984.
"While roses are a
worldwide favorite, they
do require considerable
maintenance if they are to
be productive", says Ever-
ett Janne, landscape horti
culturist with the Texas
Agricultural Extension
Service, Texas A&M Uni-
versity System.
Set out new varieties of
bare root plants no later
than four weeks before the
area's average last frost
date. However, container
plants can be set out at any
time.
Prune roses in early
spring, just as leaf buds
begin to swell but before
active growth starts. Be-
cause of the severe De-
cember freeze over Texas,
pruning may have to be
delayed until actual
growth starts, notes the
horticulturist. Cut off all
winterkilled growth and
remove any broken or dis-
eased canes.
Prune most hush-roses,
to leave about five vigor
ous canes 18 to 24 inches
tall. Hybrid tea varieties
may be cut back one fourth
to produce an abundance of
small blooms, one half to'
produce a moderate num
her of medium sized flow
ers, and three fourths to
provide a smaller number
of exhibition sized roses
Prune climbing and ram-
bling roses after they
bloom, advises Janne.
They produce flowers on
one year old canes from
buds that developed late
last summer. If canes are
too long, they can he
trimmed now, but they
must not be cut back
drastically because it
would eliminate most
flowers this year.
Treat all cut ends with
asphalt wound dressing or
a drop or two of common
white glue to keep insects
out, suggests the horticul-
turist.
