City Aldermen Hold
Informative Meeting
The City Aldermen and Mayor Bill
Kimberlin met in an open meeting with many
interested citizens to discuss a variety of
items.
One of the most important items discussed
during the meeting was the application for a
Block Grant. The grant will be total in money
to $500,000. This money can only be used in
the designated area where the grant was
applied for. The area designated as most
needy for the federally slated funds are
Phillips and Green Hill Streets and the
surrounding area. It is hopeful that the grant
application will be accepted as the funds will
be used to pave streets, improve water works
and posibly construct a park in this vicinity,
vicinity.
Rosanna Jones of Concerned Citizens and
many senior citizens were there to protest the
closing of the alley behind the Concerned
Citizens building. The alley was closed by the
City in response to a request made by a
property owner. It was decided to reconsider
the closing and hopefully find a more
workable solution.
Karen Rumage attended the meeting to
suggest speed bumps or speed limit signs for
Hillcrest and College. Speed limit signs have
beenordered by the city and will be placed at
these locations upon arrival. Police
enforcement will be patroling the area for
speeding cars and stop sign violators.
A town meeting will be held on November
20 at 9:00 p.m. to discuss lake financing and
the new lake site.

Tigers Win Over
Northwest 10-7
Billy Dobbs' 30-yard field goal in the fourth
quarter brought the Tigers all the way up on
the scoreboard to defeat Northwest 10—7.
Billy had missed an attempt earlier, but his
kick proved to be the difference in Friday
nights game.
Northwest had a field goal attempt by
Kelly Pike blocked in the first quarter and the
Tigers put the first points on the board in the
second quarter when Blake Bowen went in
from the one yard line.
But the Northwest Texans just seemed to
be on the short end of the offensive output all
night. The Tigers overpowered them in every
sense of the game, a big turn around from the
last few games of district play.

70th Anniversary At Jermyn
Methodist Church
m
community is invited to be a part of this
united service,
of Thanksgiving.
Members of the Jermyn Methodist Church:
celebrated its 70th anniversary Sunday,
starting with Sunday School at 9:30, church
at eleven, with Rev. Jack Johnson, Graham,
pastor, preaching the sermon. He spoke of the
early settlers who came in covered wagons to
take up government grants, building their
homes and churches, planting their crops
and trusting that their new home would
prove to be a wise move from the east. He
stated that city people were wanting to move
back to the rural communities. They were
tired of living the hurried life of the big cities.
Two new homes have been built recently in
Jermyn.
Mrs. Chas. (Alma Carter) King was
recognised as a person who lived by faith...
Rev Johnson stated, She was one person who
always said,'Oh! we just can't close our
church.' " He said, "We are here today to
honor her." Alma has played the piano for
the church many years, painted the large
picture "The Open Door" in the back of the
church, and along with her late husband,
Chas. King, kept the church repaired, saw to
the many things that kept the church going.
She teaches the junior class.
Mrs. Warrena Pruitt, bom in Jermyn,
joined the church in 1925, the same time her
father did. Parents were the late Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Warren. Mrs. Pruitt teaches a Sunday
School class and is the only member of the
original board.
A large photograph, (by Carl Werner) of the
church was presented the members, by Laura
Peacock in behalf of the Jack County
Historical Commission. It was in 1968 the
Jermyn Methodist Church was named a
Historical Landmark, and a marker was
erected on the front of the building, giving the
history of the church.
This church was organized November 24,
1907 on the front porch of the home of the late
Mr. and Mrs. W.T.Jones. The old home still
stands behind the church. The Jones home
was the first residence built on the new town
site of Jermyn. The congregation met in the
homes that first winter. By spring of 1910 the
various business houses were being built and
church services were held in Jones Bros.
Store, the Depot and G&TW Railroad Round
House, and perhaps some of the other
buildings, before they were ready for
occupancy. A brush arbor was built and
Sunday School and church held there, that
summer. In the fall of 1910 a lot was
purchased and the present building was
erected. The Sunday School rooms were built
about 1926 when The Late Rev. P.D.
Moreland was pastor. The late S.E. Sherwood
was the first Sunday School superintendent.
The parsonage was brought in and furnished
in 1951 for Rev. Geo. G Graham and his bride,
"Dorothy/
The present pastor, Rev. W.T. Johnson
resides in Graham. The little parsonage
serves the community as a meeting place for
"TTie Lost Valley China Painters Guild".
Mrs. King said, 'The little parsonage is just
marking time until it is needed again for a
pastor."
Thirty two pastors have served this Jermyn
Methodist Church since it was established in
1909. Rev. Johnson thanked Mrs. King for
compiling the history of the church and
ing the records through the years.
