Cats Make “
Speedy” Recovery,
By Stan Brudney
Make a mental note of this date,
time, place, and situation ... Sept-
ember 28th, 4:56 of the third period,
Hufford Field, pieman vs. Cisco.
Six weeks from' now, Biuecat fans
might turn back the pages in their
minds and utter, “that was THE
time of the game and year which
made this district title possible”.
Iiet’s hope boosters of the program
can make that statement in Novem-
ber.
It was the TIME when the
Bluecats came of age in a still young
campaign .. . from “glorified” JV
status to bonafide varsity creden-
tials ... from the crawling stags to
walking with heads erect, backs
straight! A TIME of emotion, a
sense of accomplishment, and an
amazing transformation from wan-
dering aimlessly ct times to total
control. In fact, domination would
be a better description!
Okay, why all the superlatives?!
Well, when Dwight, alias Speedy,
alias “Spud" Holloway gathered in a
quick pass from QB McCord Wilson
at 4:55 of the third period against
Cisco and raced 43 yards to paydirt,
the season changed!
The Bluecats spent another futile
first half, mimicking other 1964
efforts which gained them a rather
Cat JV, Kittens
Win Two Of
Three From Cisco
The news was better this week
for the three Coleman underclass
football teams.
At Cisco on Thursday, Jack
Baucom’s and Ray Findley's junior
varsity gridders punched out a
tough 14-6 victory over the Loboes.
It marked the first victory for a host
of JV players since they entered the
junior high grid program. Needless
to say, the victory was a happy
morale builder.
The JVs scored on a 56 yard pass
play from Mike Nunez to David
Edwards on the third play from
scrimmage. A good fake enabled the
quick pass to work flawlessly. Later
in the contest, Nunez again used the
airways to reach paydirt on a 15
yard scoring pass to Bryant Brown.
Tight end David Edwards convert-
ed the two-pointer on a reverse to
put the young Cats up, 14-6.
The defense preserved the win
with a stubborn stand at their own
five as the game ended. Cisco had
five plays to score from that point
but the visitors were equal to the
occasion. '
DT Terry Thompson, NO David
Edwards, LB Kerry Baker, and DE
Rob Wilson get the defensive
“stars” for their work in the
trenches.
The bad news we are so very
sorry to have to relate is that
sophomore linebacker Randy
Brooks broke his leg during the
action and was hospitalised.
At Hufford Field, John Starcher's
8th grade Bluekittens won their
District 11-AA opener with a hard
fought 12-8 win over the Loboes.
The visitors struck first on an
apparent 65 yard touchdown run
but a holding penalty nullified the
first period scoring dash. On the
Bluekittens second possession, they
marched from their own 42 to the
Loboes 38 but a fumble there ended
the threat. Chad Russell had garner-
ed a key first down on a 4th and two
situation at the Cisco 43 to set up
the march. The period was score-
less.
In the second quarter, Bluekitten
tackle Jim Sprinkles smashed the
dubious non-district distinction of
sporting an 0-3 record entering
Friday night's 11-A A opener with
Cisco. When place kicker Johnny
Jurado gave the Cats a 7-6 lead after
Holloway's flight downfield, the
Cats came alive.
They took no prisoners! Cisco felt
the wrath of a frustrated Randy
Smith team ready to bust from the
ranks of the winless. They played
like there was no tomorrow. The
defense was ferocious. The pads
popped, the grunts sounded, and
Cisco suffered! The Loboes were
limited to three first downs in the
second half and they mustered only
21 yards passing and 34 yards
rushing after THE moment.
In the meantime, the Cats' offense
racked up nine first downs, 63yards
rushing, and 99 yards passing
during and after THE moment And
the production paid off... Smith's
marauders lit the scoreboard scor-
ing column faster than the lights
blink on the strip at Vegas. In the
final 6:31, the Cats scored three
touchdowns to turn a close contest
into a rout. The first 11-AA hurdle
had been passed to the tune of 27-6.
The combination of QB McCord
Wilson and SE Speedy Holloway, a
pair of 145 pounders, gave the scant
local crowd some very exciting
punter at the Loboes 37 and his
teammates were set up in great
field position. On the first play from
scrimmage, tailback Joe Beal scoot-
ed over left tackle on his way to a
37 yard TD run and the Bluekittens
led, 6-0. Mark Martinez' rush for the
two points failed.
Cisco rebounded quickly. They
marched from their 47 to the Blue-
kitten 13 on two halfback passes and
climaxed the short march with a 13
yard TD scamper around left end.
The sweep around right end made it
8-8 on the PAT attempt.
Then, in the waning moments of
the first half, Starcher employed a
bit of razzle-dazzle near midfield to
regain the lead. A double-reverse
pass play did the trick. QB Geoffrey
Hollingsworth got the ball back
from his halfbacks after two hand-
offs to each other and fired a strike
to Curtis McCreight to account for
the tally. The “trick or treater"
covered 54 yards. Joe Beal's run for
the two point conversion failed.
The nifty pass play was to
conclude the scoring for the evening
though the Bluekittens had another
fourth period TD nullified due to
illegal procedure infraction. Sprin-
kles again blocked a Cisco punt to
set the wheels in motion at the
Bluekittens' 45.
Joe Beal picked up 16 yards to the
Loboes' 41 and Chad Russell dashed
tor another 13 to the 28 yard line.
Stalling at that point, the locals
were faced with 4th and 17. Harvey
Ramirez, standing in punt forma
tion, connected with Curtis Mc-
Creight to the Cisco 17 to pick up
the FD by a half yard. Three runs
later and the Kittens were poised to
strike at the Loboes' 2. QB Hollings
worth rolled left and found Me
Creight alone in the end zone for the
six pointer but it was disallowed by
an illegal procedure call.
The 8th graders are now 2-1
overall. They rolled up 198 total
yards and committed only three
penalties in notching the win. They
appear to be getting stronger each
week.
In the 5:00 p.m. opener, Brooks
Boynton’s 7th grade Bluekittens
fell, 22-8 but they played well
considering the circumstances. The
squad had only 14 players suited up
as eight students were ruled ineli-
gible this past week because of
moments. Holloway gathered in
nine passes for 137 yards and his
receptions from Wilson accounted
for seven of the 13 Biuecat first
downs. One of Holloway’s recep-
tions was a clever theft of an
apparent interception by DB Shelby
Nixon at the Loboes' three yard
line. Nixon soared high into the air
to pick off a Wilson pass at the
sidelines but Holloway wrestled it
away on Nixon’s descent to earth.
The interception, turned comple
tion, set up the Cats' second tally as
Albert Dela Rosa tallied from there
a play later on a Wilson option pitch.
On the ensuing kickoff, Dela Rosa
reminded Josh Potter that he likes
special team play as well by deliver
ing a knockout blow to Potter at the
Loboes' 13. Several plays later,
Chris Brigandi recovered a Cisco
bobble at the 20 and a third Cat TD
was in the offing. Two plays later,
Dela Rosa took a deep handoff and
raced 17 yards to score, splitting the
Loboes' middle. Jurado's kick made
it 20-6 with 3:27 to go in the game.
Moments later, Chris Brigandi
pressed the instant replay button
and recovered another fumble at the
Loboes' 17. Wingback Darrell War
rick had the honors, darting 14
yards three plays later to put a lid
on a sensational fourth period for
the Cats.
In case Coleman Bluekitten grid
fans were wondering about the
starting and stopping of the score-
board clock last Thursday at Huf-
ford Field, there is a logical answer
to why the clock kept running
during times out and after scoring
plays, etc.
Time limits have been stipulates!
for junior high games this year by
the superintendents of the member
schools. Bill Gunn of Baird is the
district chairman.
Under the District 11 AA rules
and regulations, general regulation
(L) says: Each junior high and B
team will play on Thursday night at
opposite sites. Seventh grade game
will begin at 5:00 p.m., play 6
minute quarters with six minutes
between halves. If at 5:55 p.m.,
there is more than 5 minutes left on
the clock, an official timeout will be
called. The clock will be reset for 5
minutes and the clock will not be
grades.
A bright spot for Boynton's
Kittens was halfback Freddie Den-
bow who tallied the 7th grade's first
TD of the season on a 49 yard dash
in the third period. QR Eric Tharps
converted the twopointer on a
keeper around right end. Denbow's
scoring run cut the Cisco lead to 14-6
at the time but Lance Moore turned
in a 25 yard scoring run later in the
quarter to solidify the win. David
Zell’s two-point run made it 22-8 ,.
the final score. Moore tallied Cisco's
first TD midway in the opening
period of play on a three yard run.
The junior vanity, 7th and 8th
grade teams host Albany on Thun
day with the 7th grade contest
kicking off the evening at 5:00 p.m.
The Loboes' lone six-pointer came
on their first possession of the
contest, following a Biuecat fumble
at Cisco’s 33. Eleven plays later,
Johnny Ramirez followed blocker
Steve Abbott over right tackle from
the three and the visitors led, 6-0. A
fake kick for the PAT failed when
Bluecats Scott Kirby, Edward Mor
ales, and Jim Caldwell met the
Loboes runner head on at the six
yard line.
Both teams sputtered until half-
time as the damp grounds and chilly
“temps” appeared to be taking their
toll. The Bluecats’ deepest penetra-
tion was the Loboes’ 36 ... .Two
interceptions hampered any offen-
sive threat the Cats could muster.
Cisco, on the other hand, managed
117 yards rushing and eight first
downs during the first 16 minutes
but the Cats’ stubborn "D" held
them to a 6-0 intermission lead.
The second half was "Biuecat
Fever" personified. The prison
camps were left unbuilt at Hufford
Field. Believe me, there wasn’t a
need!

OFF THE CUFF
The Bluecats join Eastland (34-7
winners over Winters), Albany (21-6
over Jim Ned), and Baird (21-0 over
Ranger) at the top of District 11-AA
after one week ... Smith’s Cats did
stopped again until the game is
over. The 8th grade games will start
at 6:00 p.m., play 7 minute quarters
with 7 minutes between halves. The
same procedure will be in effect at
6:55 p.m. with the clock reset for 5
minutes and not stopped again until
the game is over. The Junior
Varsity game will begin at 7:00
p.m., play 10 minute quarters with
10 minutes between halves. Also in
all three games if, at the end of the
third quarter or any time there
after, there becomes a 30 point
spread in points, the game is
Mozelle Colts
Win First
Over Tal-Cen, 7-6
[Contributed by Glenda C<uh\
Winning is nice! The Mozelle
Colts, with eighth grader Ed Wilson
back in action, traveled to Talpa
determined to change their luck.
They did!
The Colts' single touchdown came
in the fourth quarter when Bobby
Williams pitched the ball back to Ed
Wilson, who raced 20 yards for the
touchdown. Archie Jameson carried
the ball for the extra point.
Davi Lanham pitched in with the
only interception of the night. Other
Colts contributing to the victory
were Gabriel Guerrero. Pete Guer
rero. Mark Garrett, Sean Gordon.

ry Williams. Carrol Sutton. Dar-

not get penalized a single yard
against Cisco . .. Senior linebacker
Duwayne Hunter and junior nose-
guard Scott Kirby had tremendous
games at those defensive positions.
Of course, the entire defensive unit
played like "Doomsday" . . .
Albany is next for the Cats-on the
road this Friday . . . Game time is
7:30 p.m.... Johnny Jurado and
the kicking game helped the Cat
cause a great deal-his kickoffs went
through the end zone twice in the
final period (he was three of three
on PAT tries).. .One down, six to
go, Bluecats!... I just know you're
dying to hear the outcome of last
Saturday’s Edinboro State-Slippery
Rock contest in Pennsylvania ...
well, “Slimy Pebble" fell to the
Fighting Scots, 31-26 in their annual
shootout... this Edinboro "ex" is
just plain thrilled .. . coupled with
the fact that the Bluecats won and
looked good in doing so, it was a
“super" sports weekend ... I would
imagine there were questions being
asked in Cisco over the weekend
about coach John Parchman's early
fourth period decision to go for a
first down on 4th and 2 at the
Loboes' 28 (Coleman led at the time,
7-6) . . . Duwayne Hunter and
Stacey McKee leveled Danny Kear-
ney in the hole at the 29 and CHS
took over there .. . about two min-
terminated at that time.
Apparently, these district guide
lines will be strictly enforced. So.
now you know! Whether it makes
sense or not, the clock will be
running after the five minute reset-
ting and games will end on time.
Both ends will never meet it

called with two minutes remaining

rule.
Sophomore QB Rick McGee had
an instrumental hand in the lopsided

passing for four more. Todd Vine-

Dwight Keeney scored twice and
Matt Motley once. One of Keeney's
touchdowns came via the intercep
tion route for 45 yards.
It was a key victory for Lilly’s
Hornets. Star was 86 entering the

8A. The shutout win sets up a key
matchup between county teams this
Friday when Novice travels to

Mounties Lose
Heartbreaker To
Sterling City
The climax to the District 8-A
West opener between Santa Anna
and host Sterling City last Friday
night could be compared to a final
scene in an Alfred Hitchcock thrill-
er. Unfortunately, for Galen Pri-
vitt’s Mounties, the ending was not
a happy one.
With the score deadlocked at
14-14 and time winding down in the
final stanza, Sterling City began a
march at their own 45 yard line.
They were faced with two crucial
fourth down situations along the
way . . . both times they converted.
With 4th and 8 at the Mounties 30,
SCHS completed a screen pass to
the Black and Gold 21 . . . first
down by a yard. Later, faced again
with 4th and 8, the determined
hosts picked up the marker by a foot
at the SAHS 11 on a bootleg play.
With a couple of ticks left on the
scoreboard clock, Sterling City lined
up for a game winning field goal
attempt at the SAHS eight yard
line. Mounties' defensive players
Craig Duquette and Buster Hensley
rushed the kicker, blocked the FG
attempt and apparently the game
had ended in a tie. It |vaa not to
be ... a roughing the kicker penal-
ty was called and Sterling City lined
up again with no time remaining on
the clock. Getting the reprieve,
Sterling City booted it through the
uprights from the SAHS 8 to
capture a 17-14 victory to send their
fans home with a thrilling district
opening victory.
The Mounties took a 14-0 lead into
the locker room at halftime on runs
of two and one yards, respectively
by Chris DeLeon and Raymon
Vasquez. Both times, Vasquez nail-
ed the PAT boots.
Sterling City came roaring back
in the second half, tallying a
six pointer on a seven yard run,
climaxing a 54 yard scoring drive.
Then, on their first possession of the
final quarter, they knotted the game
at 14 on a 52 yard pass play.
Coach Privitt had these remarks
after the game. “We just didn’t play
well in the second hair. “We had
two crucial fumbles after long runs
which killed our drives”. “It was
just one of those finishes for us.”
The Mounties rushed for 124
yards on 42 carries while Sterling
City netted 80 yards on 41 carries
via the ground route. SC had the
edge in passing. 151 to 19. They also
nosed out the visitors in first downs,
11 -0. Sterling City lost four fumbles
.. . SAHS bobbled two.
Leading ball carriers for the
Mounties. now 81 overall, were
Raymon Vasquez with 85 yards on
15 carries and Shelby Tuttle with 15
carries for 50 yards.
One of the key plays for the
SAHS side was a blocked punt by
freshman nose guard David Tucker
at the Sterling City five yard line to
set up the Mounties' second TD of
the evening.
The Black and Gold will try to
bounce back this Friday when they
engage Miles at home in another 3A
West shootout. Kickoff time is 7:30
p,m.

THE "REF” gets a lot of help on the above
Biuecat scoring play during action in the District
11 -AA opener between Cisco and Coleman last
Friday night at Hufford Field. From left to right,
Speedy Holloway, Duwayne Hunter (34) and

Albert Dela Rosa (20) crosses the Loboes' goal
