COLEMAN DEMOCRAT-VOICE
Summer months were busy ones
at the library, with the traditional
Summer Reading Club enrolling
over 150, 73 of whom completed 10
books to win certificates. Addition-
ally, there were programs for the
children.
Now everyone is settled into the
quieter routine of fall, and librarian
Edwina Justice and her library aide
Sue Dossey are catching up on some
of their other work.
One of the jobs they have com-
pleted is color-coding books for the
younger children, so they can tell at
a glance what the books are about.
Mothers say they like color coding
too as it helps children find the
books more quickly and without
adult help. For example, easy books
have a small bright yellow label on
the spine of the book, series (a, b, c
and counting books) have red labels,
Spanish books have dark green
labels, junior titles have bright
green, and so on.
RETIRED TEACHERS
VALUABLE VOLUNTEERS
Coleman County Retired Teach-
ers continue to be an asset to the li-
brary. They are keeping the library
open from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday
evenings. This will be a service to
students and persons who work and
cannot get to the library at other
times.
Also, they will be decorating the
window near the entrance, changing
it about once a month. Their work
with this project drew lots of
attention last year.
If you are one of the people who
has been requesting additional time
for the library to be open, please
stop by. If there is not enough
response, the service will be dis-
continued.

MANY NEW BOOKS
NOW ON THE SHELVES
Edwina and Sue are also busy
processing a number of new books
which are being purchased with the
$2,562 grant awarded to Coleman
Public Library last April from the J.
Frank Dobie Foundation.
The board and staff stated in their
foundation application that they
would spend the money on more
books for children and more Texas
books.
A small sampling of some of these
follows:
“A Loose Herd of Texans” by Bill
Porterfield is a collection of short
pieces on characters from the Texas
Heartland.
‘Texas Cowboys, Memories of the
Early Days” by Jim and Judy
Lanning is about all aspects of
cowboy living in early Texas com-
piled by authors from interviews
with old cowhands which were made
in the 1930’s.
“Common Texas Grasses" by
Frank W. Gould is a key to the 150
most familiar grass species in
Texas. Line drawings of each specie
accompany the text which is read-
able and usable for ranchers, farm-
ers and amateurs.
“Jane Long, The Mother of
Texas” by Catherine Gonzalez is the
story of the first woman of English
descent who came to Texas in the
early 1800’s and was the mother of
the first child of Anglo-American
parents born in Texas in 1816.
A sample of children's new titles
include ‘The Childhood of Famous
Americans” a series of 14 books
about the childhood of persons such
as Thomas Edison, Lou Gehring,
John F. Kenney, Abraham Lincoln,
Babe Ruth”, etc.
A valuable book for teachers,
nursery school workers, Sunday
School teachers, and all who work
with young children is a new book,
“Listen and Help Tell the Story”.
The book includes instructions for a
variety of stories and related hand
movements and sound effects de-
signed to teach children to listen.
