Perhaps the biggest sup-
porter of Hicks was de-
parting coach Hill, who said
after learning of the boards
move, "he is the only man
for the job, a real diamond
in the rough. He did an
outstanding job for me.
The City of Jacksboro has many advantages over its
neighboring cities for potential growth. Sometimes it
seems w e have been too richly endowed.
We have one of the best built-in tourist attractions in
the state. Oil production has long been a big plus fac-
tor in our economy. Now with the energy crisis, oil and
gas exploration with its accompanying drilling boom
pumps dollars into the trade area. More highways come
into Jacksboro than any other city in this part of the
state. Our fine schools attract and hold residents. We
modestly mention that our new paper has the second
largest circulation per county capita of any in Texas.
Steps must be taken to keep and to build on this won-
derful potential and continue to grow and add to the de-
velopment of the city. Every avenue must be explored
by our business organizations, newspapers and city
government to stay on the move.
One of the most important entities is city government,
and it simply cannot keep up under its present form. We
have a chance -to change from the old two person com-
mission which is unable to keep up with the affairs of
a growing city to a five person aldermanic form at the
a mayor and two city
commissioners.
The referendum was
added to the ballot when
com m ission worn an Ma rt ha
Green presented a petition
to the city commission at
an earlier city commis-
sion meeting.
On the ballot for the
Jacksboro city elections, in
the mayors race, the name
of Charlie Dickson heads
the list, next is the name
of Bill Kimberlin and third
on the list of mayorial can-
didates is the name of
Aaron Hull. One blank for
write in voting is also on
the ballot.
On the same ballot are
names of six candidates
contesting for two expired
terms on the Jacksboro
City Commission. Heading
the list is the name of
Russell Junior Jones, next
is the name of A.J. Jack-
son. then the name of
Rod Hammond, followed by
the name of John Kirk
Stewart, followed bv the
name of Ed Henry Ste-

listed oil the ballot is the
name of incumbent eom-
mission woman Martha
Green. Also there will
be two blanks for write in
candidates.
On the Jacksboro School
Board ballot the name of
Loretta Gunter. Sharon
Hammond and Rita Sue
Barnett was clocked at
52.1. their best time this
year.
Rita Sue Barnett took
second place in the high
jump with her best jump

lie worked as the head
coach lor five years. Af-
ter the six year stay in
Sanger he was an assis-
tant for one season at Fris-
co High School before
returning to Jacksboro
High School to become an
assistant.
During the past 11 years
Hicks had held every coach-
ing job at Jacksboro High
School except the head
coach and athletic direc-
tor post before being
named to the job during a
Thursday night school
board meeting.
His first efforts will be
aimed at bringing three
new assistant coaches to
JHS. One will be the new
hovs basketball coach and
wiil replace Mike Atchley,
another will replace JHS
track coach Jay Starnes,
who resigned to enter
another field, and the
third assistant will replace
Hicks himself. All three
w ill also serve as assis-
