Tie Weter Work* Bm4i Slid
Monday Mayor II. C, McClure
returned from Austin were he had
been before the State School board
in hopes of selling the Waterworks
bonds. This he succeeded in doing
by shrewd management and a little
help by influential friends at Aus-
tin among whom was the governor
himself.
The bonds were disposed of at a
much greater advantage than pny
one conversant wtih finanancial
conditions at this time had any
idea. Yhcy were sold at 97 percent
of the par value and accrued inter-
est which will net the city nearly
$28,000. A long and careful effort
had been made to dispose of these
bonds but heretofore the bids off-
ered were too low and par value of
the bonds had been the highest
offered. Iri that case we- would
lose the accrued interest'and besides
'this there might be several months
delay or even a year before the
money would be forthcoming as
the eastern buyers would demand
time for investigation and they
would take their own time as the
interest would be aecumilating
while investigating and they them-
selves would have the use of their
money while we paid them interest
on it.
In this case the money is now
ready and City Engineer N. Weren-
skiold of Dallas, will he here Fri-
day to take charge of the matter
and work will beign just as soon
as contracts can be let and mater-
ials and supplies shipped in. The
City Council may conclude to em-
ploy a foreman and do the work
themselves. Wljile this would en-
tail a great deal of work on the
council it, is believed by some of
them that more money would be
spent in the, city by this means
which is quite an item in this kind
of work.
We 'believe that the lack of
waterworks in Jacksboro has mater-
ially hindered the city’s growth
and this condition would have
been remedied long ago had it not
been for the fact that there is such
an abundance of water in wells at
reasonable depths and so many
people have wells.
