will please remember that the tick-

a charity proposition and not a free

It is a business propostion entirely.
The merchants pay the News cold
cash for these tickets and to be
able to give them to you there
must be something done by you in
return. You are supposed to soli-
cit your friends to trade at the
stores giving these tickets. If a

of the girls in the Piano Contest

to stand Jby their choice and to
cast their votes for them. When

for 100 votes for each dollar paid.
It is little trouble to you and Will
give encouragement to the contes-

cast them for your chioce. Save
the tree coupons for them each
week, and send to the contestant.
Many hundreds of free coupons are
not brought in every week. These
if saved and presented to one of the
contestants would give them much
pleasure. If there is not a eontes-

one out yourself. We still allow
the tickets, but where you induce
some one to go to a partcuar store
and trade there is a benefit to the
store and the store is glad to give
you the tickets.
The News earnestly requests each
merchant giving tickets to abso-

The rule of the News is positive-

for at the time of pavment This
is easily understood by anyone who
will give a thought to it. There is
absolutely no advantage to us to
give votes for anything unless the
party doing business with us is
impressed enough to vote when the
money is paid.

STEAM
A FEW REASONS WHY THE
PRESSER IS BETTER:
The slow and tedious process of pressing clothes by hand is, however
connected with many disadvantages. The extremely high temperature
—approximately 900 degrees F.—at which it is necessary to operate
the hand iron used in connection with a damp pressing or sponging
cloth, in order to simultaneously press and steam the garment has a
damaging effect upon the cloth. It robs the cloth of its oils, frequent-
ly bakes it to a crisp, destroys elasticity, softness, life, color, changes
the character of the fabric, leaving it harsh and brittle, instead of soft
and pliable. The steam improves .the general condition of the cloth
because it does the work at the right temperature, 300 degrees F. it
rases the nap, prevent gloss, brings out the color, imparts new life,
lustre and beauty to the fabric, and gives that flexible soft feel hereto-
fore so difficult to obtain.

A Dr. Gibbons was building ai
house in King street, Covent garden.;
His brother, a West Indiaman cap*
fain, had brought over some plankfl|
of mahogany as ballast. He thought!
the wood might be used in the house^
but the carpenters found the wood)
too hard for their tools and object-i
ed. •
Mrs. Gibbons shortly afterwards
wanted a small box made. So the
doctor sent the mahogany .to a cab-
inet maker. He also complained
that the wood was too hard. But the
•doctor-insisted as he wanted to pre-
serve some of the wood as a m#men-j
to of his brother.
The finished box polished so nice-i
ly that the doctor ordered a bureau!
made of the same wood. The cab-i
inet maker displayed that in hiaj
window before delivering it. Thai
Duchess of Buckingham saw it and! \
begged enough wood from the doctor!
to have it duplicated. Mahogany!
furniture soon after came into pop-«
ular favor.
