LIGNITE
COAL.
Saving TP&L customers
millions of dollars
each year.
In the late 1960’s Texas Power & Light Company be-
gan reducing its dependence on natural gas and oil by
planning and constructing generating plants that use
lignite coal as fuel. Lignite is cheaper than gas or oil
and it’s readily available right here in Texas
Today, TP&L has eight lignite-fueled generating units
in operation and others are under construction.
For TP&L customers, this means that even though the
fuel portion of electric bills has increased in recent
years, bills would be millions of dollars higher each
year if lignite were not being used.
Moreover, TP&L’s use of lignite coal is helping reduce
our national problem of dependence on foreign oil.
Lignite now accounts for more than 50 per cent of the
electricity TP&L generates for its customers. And, we
plan to use more lignite in the future.
