competitors qualified for the
July 5 regional Junior
Olympics at the Austin Area
Qualifying Meet June 26.
Charles Moore, Fred
White. Fredrick Johnson
and Ronald Reed were first
in the 400 meter rel^y.
intermediate division.
Fredrick Johnson won the
100 meter dash in the
intermediate division with a
time of 11.4 seconds.
Whitney Madere was
second in the 110 meter high
hurdles and placed third in
the long jump event.
GIRLS EVENT
Hope Barnett came in
second in the girls 100 meter
event with a time of 13

Homecoming
seconds flat.
Michael Staples was third
in the 100 meters, senior
division, posting 11.2 se-
conds.
Fred White came in third
in the 100 meters event,
intermediate division.
Taking second in the high
jump was Ronald Reed.
The relay team of Paul
Davis, Deneal Martin. Ken-
neth Haywood, and Mike
Staples was third in the 400
meter relay, senior division.
Reggie Nicholson placed
third in the junior division
shot put. His throw was 39
feet and one half inch.
MIDGET WINNER
Bobbie Scott took first
place in the 50 meter dash
and first in the long jump
midget division 11 year
olds.
And Davis, Martin, Hay
wood and Staples also took
third in the mile relay with a
time of three minutes. 35.6
seconds. In this event,
Martin ran a sizzling 52
seconds for his segment. It
was his fastest time yet for a
quarter of a mile, reported
Coach Charles Elliott of
Bastrop High School who has
been working with the
summer athletes.

A 5,000 meter (3.1 miles)
Lite Beer Fun Run will be
sponsored by the Bastrop
Opera House Association in
Bastrop on Saturday,
August 2, at 8:30 a.m.
Check in time for the run
will be at 7:30 a.m. behind
the Wright Distributing Co.
W arehouse on Old Highway
71, one mile west of
theColorado River bridge.
An A.A.U. Certificate of
Appreciation will be given to
all participants and Lite beer
sun visors will be given to
the first 200 entries.
Trophies will be awarded
to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place
finishers for men and women
in the following age divi-
sions; 13 and under; 14 to 19;
20 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 and
over.
Entry fee for each
participant is $5
Proceeds for the event will
go to the Bastrop Opera
House Association and the
United States Track and
Field Team.

tion is encouraged.
Blood pressure
Study underway
No one wants nigh blood
pressure, but if you do have
it, researchers at The
University of Texas at
Austin may want you.
The University needs
volunteers for a clinical test
using a vitamin-like sub-
stance to treat high blood
pressure. If you don’t know
whether your blood pressure
is high, UT researchers will
give free pressure checks so
you can find out. Volunteers
must not oe under treatment
for hypertension to be
eligible.
Coenzyme Q10 is "perfect
ly safe," according to Dr.
Folkers.

Brenda Wright, daughter
of Dr. and Mrs. Granville
Wright of Alief, Texas, will
be competing July 5 in the
Texas State Open Swim
Meet at the University of
Texas and her grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Frieda of
Bastrop will be there.
Brenda is only 11 but has
been so successful at past
meets that she’ll be compet-
ing in the womens open
breaststroke race. Her other
grandparent is Mrs. Gladys

7 under par takes trophy
In spite of hot weather,
golfers didrnt .exactly burn
up the coftrse at Lake
Bastrop -Club Golf Course
Sunday during the monthly
select-shot 4-ball tourna
ment. The winning team
could manage only a 7 under
par 63, with the second place
team 4 under par and the
third place team only 2
under.
Taking home the winnings
were the team of Marvin
Swofford, Mark Gonzales,
Ray Longoria and Joe
Longoria. Huxley Cayton
won the pitching contest
with a not-so-close shot on #1
of 9 ft. 4 in. from the pin.
'The course is in the best
shape I’ve ever seen it,"
commented Swofford. "The
greens putted true and held
good. I couldn't buy a putt
myself but fortunately for
ourteam Mark Gonzales was
knocking them in from
everywhere."
The four ball tournament
will be held the last Sunday
of every month at the Lake
Bastrop Club Course. In
addition, a weekly putting
