In the reign of Edward VI, ordered
a runaway servant to be branded
in the breast with the letter ‘‘V”
for vagabond, and judged him to
be the slave of any purchaser for
two years. His owner, we are told,
was to give him ‘ bread, water anti
small drink and refuse meat and
cause him to work by beating,
chaining or otherwise". If the man
absented himself for 11 days dur-
ing his two years of servitude he
was to be branded on the forehead
with the letter "S."—Montreal Her-
