About Our Friends
Memories were awakened to
day when we received an invita-
tion from I. W. Briscoe, chair-
man of the invitation committ* i,
to attend a home coming at the
old church in Greenville, the
Central Christian. The event takes1
place June 4th and is the 6(ltn:
anniversary of that congregu-1
tion. We got our first service I’ i
the church and Christian Endeav- ;
or society in that congrcgatioi.!
and sometimes we think it a lo«-1
that wc do not retain the youth-j
ful enthusiasm of those days. |
Time has taken some of the lugu
great institution—in fact it is di-
vine—or it could not survive the
manner in which some of its
votaries treat it. We plan to f.i
and mingle with some of those
of our early young manhood.
Here in Denison is Byron Ander-
so (no relation) who was one of
the boys of the school and En-
deavor society.

At Capra's invitation, Preston
came here to act as technical su-'
pervisor on the picture. Few in j

qualified. For 35 years Presto i,
was superintendent of the sena'i 1
press gallery, for four years he
was Senate librarian and he
now is assistant U. S. Archivist,
on leave. Prior to entering the
goverment service, he was a news-
paper correspondent in Washig
ton.
In Press Club scenes fov th •
picture,the studio persuaded Pre -
ton to appear in a few shot-.
Preston believed he was to be
“background atmosphere,” but
Capra had other plans. H"
brought him to the foreground
with Jame Stewart and Thome
Mitchell, who play leading rob -
in the film.
In the scene, Preston and
Mitchell try to restrain Stewart
ns he swings into action against
reporters who have ridiculed him.
The (veteran press gallery attache
tried to hide behind Mitchell so
as not to take any of the spot-
light from the stars, but Capra
stopped shooting and made Pros-
on get out where he could be
seen.
"After all Jim," Capra said,
“think of all the former and
present. Wivhingtfon comjpond
ots who will want to see you n=
actor. Get out in front and be j
yourself for their sakes.”
And Preston, getting into the
spirit of the suggestion, got on' I
in front and manfully tugged at
Stewart’s arm to the satisfaction
of the exacting Capra.
Many former Washington
newspapermen already have vi-
ited the Press Club set at Colum-
bia studio to sigh over the good
old days with Pre-ton and to ex
press their amazement at the nc
