THE BASTROP ADVERTISER
Monday, July 7,1980
No, it wasn't the Bronx or
Detriot, it was Bastrop, Tex.
Thursday night around 8:30
pm when a Kerrville Stages
bus headed for Detroit
stopped on Highway 71 and
ejected 10 or 12 youths who
the driver said had been
bothering passengers and
himself. The unruly were
dumped off the bus at the
Magic Mill where several of
our lawmen were having a
cup of coffee, in case the
travelers didn't get the
point. Later somebody took
the boys into town in a
pickup truck so they could
get a ride on another bus
back to Austin.
***
The biggest thing missing
July 4th in Bastrop wasn't
a lower temperature or the
civic celebration that never
came off at the river. It was
the almost total lack of
American flags. Apparently
the Great Day of Independ
ence doesn’t have meaning
for our citizens. We’d like to
take you on a trip to
Czechosloviakia where we
saw 75 persons standing in
line to buy potatoes and a
young girl begged us to
marry her so she could
escape the oppressive re-
gime. Or to Mexico where
they have no trial by jury, or
to East Berlin where armed
guards stand along the river
with high powered rifles
aimed at you in case you
dared try to help a German
get out. Think about it: We
are still a nation that millions
would like to be able to reach
while our enemies have to
use electrified fences to keep
people from leaving.
Then we’re reminded of
Uncle Mannie who always
says to this kind of
argument: “Yes, but the
main thing is that we are
free here not to show our
patriotism if we don’t want
to. We are free to be left
alone.” The only thing wrong
with that viewpoint is that a
nation whose citizens don’t
practive a minimum of
respect for its traditions may
not keep them long.

Randy Larsen from camp
near Kerrville wrote his
mom about all the different
boys at camp, fr^jn all
different places. He said one
boy from Dallas talked about
bagels and lox. Randy wrote
he knows what kind of dog a
bagel is, but “what kind of
dog is a lox?"

Feisty Texas Monthly
places two Bastrop County
spots on its newest The Best
of Texas list. Author Richard
West, who failed to put
Bastrop on his list of best
small towns recently, tries to
make amends by calling
Bastrop State Park “The
Best Love Nest.” Why?
“Cabins with fireplaces in
the pines for $12 a night."
West also says Farrar’s
Fawcett Beauty Shop, be-
tween Bastrop and Smith-
ville, has the best name. It's
run by Mary Farrar. Close
by, Kreuz Market in
Lockhart is named The Best
Bar-b-que.

Mel Flynn told us about
The Aggie who reported to a
doctor at College Station and
was given pills plus the
warning: “Take these for 7
days, then skip a day.”
After 8 days, the Aggie
returned, looking worn out.
“How do you feel," asked the
doctor. “I was OK until that
8th day. All that skipping
just plumb tard me out.”
Talk around town: Inter
est in a motel site on
Highway 71 near Sheriff
Hoskins’ Ritter Station has
ebbed....the new Pine Forest
Golf Club which hopes to
open in October will have
food service but it won t be
extensive, leaving the main
food offerings to the Pine
Forest Inn, presided over by
Artie Revell.....Jim Kershaw
and Stanley Smith have
named the apartment com
plex they’re constructing out
of the old Bastrop Hospital
on Church St., The Orgain
Place, honoring the family
who put up the money for
the hospital....Food returns
to Ray's Place with Nellie
Davis as head cook in two to
three weeks....
