Bastrop Fire Dept seeks daytime help
By Fred Owens
Bastrop Fire Department could
use a few more daytime people, ac-
cording to Chief Mike Fisher and
they probably will get a new kind
of training.
Beside calling for volunteers.
Chief Fisher disclosed a joint train-
ing program being started with the
Bastrop Police Department.
“We need more people who are
working in Bastrop. A lot of our
people work in Austin or Elgin or
someplace else, and they’re not
available during working
hours,“Fisher said.
Fisher wants to remind potential
volunteers that the fire department
is not closed to outsiders. “We’re
not a clubby group. A cross-section
of our members is just likea cross-
section of the town."
Fisher and Bastrop Police Chief
Adell Powell have been working
on a cross-training program that
will begin next month. The respon-
sibilities of the two departments
overlap in areas such as emergen-
cy medical procedures, traffic con-
trol and traffic hazards, and search
and rescue procedures. Cross-
training is efficient and will make
the police and fire departments
more closely coordinated.
The fire department’s next
project is to acquire a new equip-
ment van. The present vehicle was
given to the department last year
along with the “jaws of life’’
hydraulic equipment. The van is
packed full with air tanks for air
tools, special waterproof tarps used
to protect furniture from water
damage, a smoke ejector fan,
generator, and various other tools.
"We bring it with us on any
major fire.“Fisher said. The
smoke ejector fan can substantial-
ly reduce property loss on a fire,
he said. Frequently smoke damage
is a lot worse than the actual fire
damage. Likewise the tarps are
used to throw over furniture and
other valuables and protect them
from water damage. “Once we’ve
evacuated the people and animals
from the building, we want to
reduce property damage as much
as possible. Soaking the building
with water is not the best way to
do this.
“If we had a bigger van, we
could carry two fans instead of one,
and more tarps, and some shovels
and axes. Plus we would have
more room to get at the equipment
quickly,“Fisher continued. The
present equipment has 142,(XX)
miles on it. It's in good shape, but
it won't last forever.
Fisher is in favor of establishing
a county-wide fire district. The
rural areas of the county are grow-
ing much nWM^rapidly than the
towns, especially the area served
by the Bluebonnet Acres Fire
Department, he said. , •
The Bastrop Fire Department
receives most of its funding from
the city, but the rural departments
are funded almost entirely by con-
tribution. Bastrop County currently
budgets $16,000 for fire protec-
tion. which is spread between 11
departments. A county-wide dis-
trict could levy taxes up to 3 cents
per $100 of property. That would
amount to a maximum of
$125,(XX), according to Fisher’s
figures. But the various depart-
ments are not in complete agree-
ment on this, and the County
Comissioners have yet to be per-
suaded of the necessity for a fire
district.

Pine beetle infestations may be on the decline
Just maybe there's a good sign
from the main office of the Nation-
al Forests in Texas that the mas-
sive Southern pine beetle
infestations might be on the
decline.
For the first time in two years,
the U S. Forest Service in Texas
has a program for selling standing,
green trees. Timber sales in the
past 24 months have all been sal-

vage from trees destroyed by the
pine beetle.
“Last year was the worst on
record for Southern pine beetle in
testations." according to Dave
Oates, the staff officer in charge of
timber management at the U S.
Forest SeVvice in Texas which is
headquartered in Lufkin.
"We devoted the bulk ot our
time in 1984 and 1985 concentrat-
ing on controlling the Southern
pine beetle in East Texas. “ Oates
explained. "The bug gave us
almost more salvage timber than
we could handle in those two
years."
“Now. however, we can reac-
tivate our green sales and that's a
good sign that maybe the worst is
behind us." Oates Imped
The National Forests provide a
steady supply of wood for public
needs, an important economic fac-
tor throughout the country and es-
pecially in areas such as East
Texas It s the law that this supply
be based on a planned, sustained-
yield basis
"The market conditions and de-
mand appear to be show ing a slight
improvement. “ Oates explained
"Our current program offers 77
million board feet of timber for sale
during most of 1986 We've had
four green sales lately and plan
three more this month." he
projected.
Oates remains cautious that the
Southern pine beetle destruction
could return in epidemic propor-
tions and he's prepared if that hap-
pens. “Should the beetle come
hack in full force, we ll shift our
priority hack to salvage sales and
make the necessary adjustments."
he explained.
Since last October, a total of 404
Southern pine beetle spots have
been detected in the National
Forests in Texas. A "spot is 10
or more infested trees. All during
1985. the bug. no larger than a
grain of rice w ith an appetite that
doesn't match his size, accounted
for nearly 5.9(X) spots. Historical-
ly. the hottest summer months are
considered the "peak season" for
the insect.
"It would be short-sighted to
think we're over this once and for
all and then have the beetle attack
us again in massive proportions."
Oates said. "At this point, though,
things are looking a lot better than
they have in a long time."
