Letters
Drivers, not trees, kill
Dear Editor:
After reading a recent
letter to eliminate the pine
trees on Highway 21. I want
to submit a vote to keep our
beautiful scenic highway.
1 live on Highway 21 and I
drive into Bastrop several
times a week. I have no fear
of the drive. 1 enjoy the
beautiful scenery. It is one of
the most beautiful highways
around here and I feel that it
would be a shame to change
it in any way. I obey the
speed limit and cars pass me
like 1 am standing still.
Therefore, 1 say that it is
speed and carelessness that
kills instead of the pines.
We have had some tragic
accidents on this highway, I
realize, but in the five years
that we have lived here,
there have been many
people killed on Highway 71.
Remember how many people
who have been killed where
Highway 21 intercepts High
way 71 and there are no pine
trees, but there are a lot of
traffice signs warning of the
intersection.
According to the Biddings
paper, there are wrecks in
that area, also, and there
aren't any pine trees there.
If you are too sleepy to
drive, pull off the road and
take a nap. There are very
few places between Circle I)
and Bastrop where you
cannot pull off the road.
Slow down, stay awake
and enjoy the scenery. It
lakes years for a pine tree to
grow, so protect our trees
and yourself at the same
time.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fredia Egger

“Human Garbage" motivates
the following: I am afraid for
the US of A. For those of us
who claim to be God’s people
let us consider the hostages
in Iran, eruptions of Mt. Ste.
Helen, arson mobs in Florida,
invasion of aliens, depres-
sion, inflation, earthquakes,
floods, drouths, etc.
Isn’t God telling us
something?
As God’s people are we
the salt of the earth Mat

mentioned in Rev 3:6? And
do we put our weallh in a
“bag with holes" Hag 1:6?
Our country is decaying
ethically and morally along
with disregard for law and
order, permissiveness, ex-
cessive use of alcohol and
drugs with all related evils,
corruption at all levels of
government, and stealing by
very many including by
people on welfare who refuse
to work, certain union
workers who demand pay
beyond their productivity,
and employers who tend to
underpay employees.
Almost everything on this
earth is good if it is used

ing governments and admini
strations.
For us to be effective
children of God in addition to
our personal lives, Mat 5:16,
we have to work toward and
insist on good and effective
government and schools. At
the present time we do not

Rooking to the future we
should insist on discipline in
our schools and teach less
sex and more ethics and

something positive we will
soon not have a US of A that
we can be proud of!

Radios needed by 969 VFD
Dear Editor:
There is an old saying, "A
new broom sweeps clean."
Well, 969 Voluntary Fire
Department is not really
hoping for fire calls- in fact,
as a brand new firefighter,
when it’s my shift and the
phone rings, I say to myself,
"Oh no, please don’t let it be
a fire." You see, we’ve all
had our training under the
ample teaching of Fire Chief
George Vogt, but having
been “on the line” only 1
week, it’s all so new...the
fear of the unknown,
perhaps.
We had our first official
call at midnight, July 3rd (a

article
Dear Editor;
On behalf of my family and
I, please accept our thanks
for your recent article on our
dear grandmother, Hazel
Ixtvelace of Smithville.
“Mammy," as she is affec
tionately known by family
and friends of family, is quite
a lady! We think you
couldn't have picked more
interesting subject matter
for a feature article. We all
enjoyed it .so very, very
much.
She could tell you enough
other incidents to fill another
article. I’m sure you are
aware. I only wish we could
write a book about her. She
has been the delight of 8
generations in our family.
She tells us stories of our
family "roots" that surpass
the memories of Smithville
she shared with you. Stories
