Aquaculture Class takes to the water
Canadian High School Ag Sci-
ence teacher Tonny Hamby took
his Aquaculture Class on a field
trip to the duck ponds last Thurs-
day. Officials from the Inland
Fisheries Department of the
Texas Parks and Wildlife demon-
strated electrofishing. Brian
Vanzee and Jim Hoy from Can-
yon set up their equipment and
boat on the shore of the north
duck pond and explained their
procedures before embarking
with one student at a time accom-
panying them.
Electrofishing is a technique
designed to sample the fish popu-
lation of a lake in order to deter-
mine the number of fish, what
species are represented, and the
health of the fish. The boat has
two booms with several cables at-
tached and a generator running
electricity through the cables and
the water, then back to the boat.
Working around the perime-
ter of the lake, which is the best
fish habitat, the boat shocks every
fish between it and the cables.
The process stuns the fish and has
no permanent effects. The class
shocked and netted large mouth
bass, red-breasted sunfish, blue-
gill, and black crappie. And ac-
cording to fish lore which says
there is always one that gets
away, one student missed a
five-pound large mouth bass.
As a thank you to the County
for allowing the project to be done
at the duck pond, the class picked
up trash in the area the next day.
Students involved were Justin
Kader, Taylor Sims, Clint Miller,
Austin Johnson, Sandy Bob Mor-
ris, Joel Hawkins, Brian
Gallagher, Zach Tipps, Travis
Lovins, David Godino, Bruce
Pickens, Devin Gober, and
Lisandro Escamilla. Several par-
ents were also on hand.
