It has placed a modern day city with
all these activities at a point where it is in
one sense in the class with ancient towns
where news traveled slow and the crier
kept the people informed.
Here we have plenty of things the
public should know yet to common voice
to tell it. The merchants have their goods
oaded on shelves, and no media through
which to hear their sales talks to the peo-

Value of Newspaper Seen
When They Shut Down
Portland is getting a taste of what a
modern town without a newspaper means
found out that while a radio may tickle
their tastes for a few high lights and a
tabloid form of entertainment, when it
comes to getting information and of know-
ing in detail as to what is going on in their
home town, there is nothing like the news-
paper.
Incidentally, we are told that stopping
the papers’ payrolls is costing the city
something like $585,000 per month. Those
who think a paper can be printed and do-
livened to the people on a mere pittance
will have thehir eyes opened.
Some statistician says there are seven
million dogs in the United States. Yes, and
half of them are in our end of town.
