or a voice implores us to abandon our carefully cultivated apathy.
In just this way, I was dislodged this week.
The images Christine brought me were in color—not the comfort-
ingly, warm color of Kodak commercials, but the dull, displaced color
of scarcity, neglect and impoverishment.
I am not often failed by words...but these photographs, and
Christine’s quiet narration, have left me almost speechless. They are
like no childhood scrapbook I have ever seen, and as I sit here at my
desk writing this column, I know that halfway around the world, those
dreadful images are repeated again and again in the lives of hundreds
of thousands of homeless Romanian children.
I am so honored and proud to
accept the Canadian-Hemphill
County Chamber of Commerce
“Woman of the Year” awTard.
When you review the list of past
recipients, I stand in awe!
I never hesitate to volunteer
when asked to help or step-in
when I see something needs to be
done because that was the way I
was raised. My parents, George
and Jane Arrington, have been my
examples!
I credit my keen interest in po-
litical matters to my high school

background in history and civics
from outstanding teachers like
Larry and N atalie Sanders, Coach
Heusel, Mr. Barney, and Coach
Scroggins (to name a few).
I owe so much to my 4-H lead-
ers who taught me organizational
skills, public speaking, and people
skills. 4-H continues to be one of
my favorite organizations. We’re
lucky to have Dan Cornett and Jan
Schafer who offer excellence to
our county in so many areas.
I am very thankful to the peo-
ple in this community who have
encouraged me through the years
to do my best and strive for more
(like Dr. Malouf Abraham, Nan
Ezzell, and Jim and Sandy Water-
field, among others). We all have
many positive role models to live
up to in Canadian!
I thank my friends who sup-
port me. I thank my boss, David
Taylor, who allows me to be a mom
and a community volunteer along
with being a teacher. I tiiank my
Grandmother Ollie Arrington, for
being my inspiration.
I share this award with Big Ed.
Capp, Cadd and Carlee. They are
the reasons I stay involved in so
many activities. I’m glad to live in
Canadian, Tx. where my family
can be involved in so many activi-
ties together. I’m glad I am able
to give my time to a community
that has given me so much.
Thanks to Georgia King, Lee
Wagner, the Chamber Board, and
the many volunteers (like George
and Dee Dee Briant and Cindy
Crossgrove), that helped to make
the Chamber Banquet extra-spe-
cial for me this year. Thanks, Ca-
nadian! I’m so proud!
Sincerely,
Julie Arrington Culver
Dear Nan,
Thank you very much for print
ing the article about the American
International Student Exchange
Program. I appreciate your help
and support in trying to find
homes for these students.
I also think you and Laurie are
doing a really nice job on the news-
paper. Keep up the good work,
and thank you again for your sup-
port.
Sincerely,
Cindy Young
