Verdict on Horne: Guilty
Ed Horne, one of the
most flamboyant
operators to try to do
business in Bastrop Coun-
ty during the late oil boom,
is on his way to state
prison.
A San Antonio jury
found him guilty of arson
in the mysterious blaze that
leveled his lavish Bexar
County home in early 1981
at thetime he was operating
an auto agency in Smith-
ville. A fast talking,
charismatic man who wore
his dark black hair long (we
think it was a wig) and
sometimes dressed in
Christian Dior fashion and
other times as a roughneck,
Horne had big plans for the
agency he got after the Jeb
Fredrickson bankruptcy.
He was going to turn it into
a giant used car and service
facility, marketing late
model autos from a
National Car Rental agen-
cy in San Antonio that he
was also involved with.
Horne was involved with
too much to keep track —
bridal shops, trucker
motels, you name it. And
some folks in Smithville
saw him as a Mr.
Moneybags come to help
the community. In fact, he
was broke.
In the San Antonio trial,
the prosecutor said,
“When you get into
trouble, you burn down
what you have insured.”
The fire didn’t start Hor-
ne’s troubles, said the
prosecutor. “When a per-
destroyed his $600,000
home and that the family
lost all its most precious
belongings. We recall, too,
that the diamond ring his
wife wore, miraculously
survived the fire. He said
she found it in the ashes.

Like a lot of crooks,
Horne was an engaging
man. We have to admit we
enjoyed listening to him
spin his magic of castles in
Spain or Smithville. He did
think big and he did like to
buy ads. The only trouble
was he didn’t pay for some
of them.

Navy know-how.
It’s working for America.
State Senator John Sharp
of Victoria, after a bitter
campaign, last Wednesday
won an easy victory over
Tim Von Dohlen of Goliad
for the full four-year
District 18 term even
though Von Dohlen again
carried Bastrop County.
District-wide, Sharp
gained 20,767 votes to
11,804 for Von Dohlen,
about two-to-one but not
quite as great a margin as in
the Nov. 6 special election
to fill the unexpired term of
the late John Wilson.
In Bastrop County
Sharp had 545 to 734 for
Von Dohlen.
Voter turnout in Bastrop
County was a little higher
than Nov.. 6. At the earlier
election, Von Dohlen got
527 votes and Sharp 485 so
each candidate gained but
Von Dohlen gained the
most.
Sharp’s huge lead in his
home Victoria County
made him unbeatable. He
won 9,734 there compared
to only 874 for Von
Dohlen.
Even though Sharp had
a conservative voting
record as a state represen-
tative, Von Dohlen sup-
porters attempted to pic-
ture him as a liberal and
advocate of higher proper-
ty taxes. The tactics did not
work on a district-wide
basis.
In Bastrop County 1,279
persons voted compared to
1,071 of the 13,703 eligible
voters in the Nov. 6 elec-
tion. Less than 10 percent
ofthe registered voters cast
ballots in each of the elec-
tions.
Sharp won the South
Bastrop, East Bastrop, Pin
Oak, McDade, East Smith-
ville and Bluebonnet Acres
boxes and Von Dohlen
took all 13 of the remaining
19 boxes plus the absentee
voter box.
Von Dohlen did par-
ticularly well in Elgin,
taking the West Elgin box
99 to 29, East Elgin 79 to 32
and South Elgin 44 to 19.
“Republicans in Elgin
talked up Von Dohlen;
becaue of his endorsement
by Pinky Wilson,” one
election judge commented.
Sharp won the South
Bastrop box 48 - 43 and
East Bastrop 5 to 4 but lost
North Bastrop 47 - 38, and
West Bastrop, 44-30.
In Smithville, Von
Dohlen won the West
Smithville box 83 to 65 and
lost East Smithville 85 to
93.
Rosanky went for Von
Dohlen 23 - 14, Cedar
Creek tied at 13 - 13, Pin
Oak wasfor Sharp, 28-13
as was McDade, 33 - 14
Von Dohlen took Watter-
son,20-12, Red Rock, 31 -
24, Paige, 13-6, Utley, 14 -
8,Kovar, 10-8,andtheab-
sentee box, 43 to 12. Blue-
bonnet Acres supported
Sharp 28to 15.
All the votes in the coun-
ty were delivered to Coun-
ty Clerk Joyce Schaefer by
8 p.m. with Kovar report-
inglast.
