Project Graduation gets a boost
The Hemphill County Commissioners Court approved a $1,000 donation to the Project Graduation
Committee in a meeting Monday morning. Judge Bob Gober (right) presented the check to the Commit-
tee Chairman Debbie Innis (center) and Lana Graham, Chairman of Prizes and Donations. The Com-
mittee held a meeting last Thursday to plan the post-graduation party. Anyone interested in volunteering
or donating money or prizes may call Graham at 323-9246 or Innis at 323-5224.

Travis Forrest winner in
County Spelling Bee
Fifth Grader Travis Forrest
was the top speller in the
Hemphill County Spelling Bee
held Monday evening at Cana-
dian Elementary School.
Nine youngsters took part in
the Bee. Travis was declared the
winner after correctly spelling
“thorny”. He was the third place
winner in the 1999 competition.
Travis, the son of Dale and
Paula Forrest, will compete in the
Golden Spread Regional Bee to
be held April 15 in Canyon.
In second place—and declared
the Junior Champion—was
Fourth Grader Colby Kitchens,
who went down on “galaxies”,
which was correctly spelled by
the winner before going on to
“thorny”.
In third place was Sixth
Grader Kamran Ahmed, who was
tripped up on"powwow8".
The other participants were
Tony Penquite, Jessica Kidd,
Chris Moreno, Kelsey Hanes,
Colin Lowom, and Travis
Renfro. Lois Laubhan was the
pronoun cer and the judges were
Edna Argo, Phyllis Spruell, and
Lisa Ayala.
The top three spellers in the
Hemphill County Bee won money
prizes given annually by a former
Woman’s Club member.
CattleWomen scholarship
available to 2000 seniors
The Top of Texas
CattleWomen will be giving two
$500 and two $250 scholarships to
year 2000 high school seniors who
plan to major in an agricultural,
nutritional or health related held
in college. The scholarships are
available to students living in
Hemphill, Lipscomb, Carson,
Collingsworth, Ochiltree, Rob-
erts or Wheeler counties.
Applications are available at
schools in these counties.

Brainard urges interested stu-
dents to take advantage of this
opportunity soon, as the applica-
tions must be sent to Sandra
Christner, P.O. Box 522, Wheeler
TX 79096 by April 28.
Schools of the scholarship win-
ners will be notified in early May,
prior to graduation.
