All State Band members

Rodriguez, Dr. Gary Garner, conductor and clinician for the All State Band, and Cody Goetz.
Reagan County band students
perform with All-State Band
Last week two Reagan County Band students traveled to San Antonio to rehearse with the Association of Texas
Small School Bands’ All-State Band. On Saturday, Richard Rodriguez, senior trombone player and Cody Goetz,
freshman bass trombone player joined students from across Texas to present a public concert in the Scottish Rite
Auditorium.
For All-State Band, students go through a lengthy try-out process that involves three different auditions. At each
level, students must play difficult music for a panel of judges. The judges rank each student and certify the top
students on to the next level. The final audition is conducted at the beginning of the All-State Bands’ rehearsal
in San Antonio. This final audition or “chair test,” determines the chair order for the All-State Bands. For the
selection process, Texas is divided into Five Areas with each Area certifying the same number of students to State.
This year at the state seating audition, Richard Rodriguez earned first chair trombone in the concert band. There
were twenty trombones at state and this placed Richard number eleven overall. This is a tremendous honor for
Richard and Reagan County.
The clinician/conductor for the 1997 All-Stale Concert Band was Dr. Gary Gamer from West Texas A & M
in Canyon. Dr. Gamer isa well-known band director, composer and author. He is also an accomplished flute player
with several recordings to his name.
The All-State Concert Band premiered a new piece of music written especially for them . The piece of music,
“Romanza Semplicc,” was written by Fred Allen from Stephen F. Austin University. The new song was well
received by the capacity audience.
RC Band Director Bob Vetter stated, “We are very proud of Richard and Cody. They put in many hours of hard
work to reach the All-State Band.” Vetter continued with, “At the beginning of the concert the band plays the
National Anthem. It is a moment that everyone should experience. Congratulations Richard and Cody on a job
well done!”

Tentative plans have been drawn
and a tentative site selected for the
new building. The tentative site
