HICKS FAMILY REUNION
HELD
The Hicks family reunion was
held at the home of the late
Hercilia Meadows, last child of
Fabian Hicks, on Saturday July
12, 1969.
There were different types of
food to tempt the palate and
Raymond Hicks brought most
of the 32 chickens and 6 lambs
together to feed the crowd. The
ladies showed off their cookery
when they brought delicious pe-
can, apple, and other pies.
Fabian Hicks started the whole
thing when he traveled from San
Antonio to Bandera in 1857 and
became a member of the first
Commissioners Court and a
highly respected member of the
community. He later served as
sheriff, cattle inspector, sheep
inspector, _ county commissioner,
Indian fighter, confederate sol-
dier and the father of 10 children.
His direct descendants now
number more than 225 and the
representatives of the clan in-
cluding in-laws number over
315.
The precentages in attendance
were led by Elvious’ descendants
and 80 per cent showed up.
Elvious was sherriff during the
prohibition era and was killed
in line of duty. His two boys—
Raymond and Walton “Speedy”
have carried on his tradition.
The second place for atten-
dance went to Glema’s descen-
dants which showed 48 per cent
followed by Fabian’s with 35
per cent.
One of the events wass a spell-
ing match led by a team of old
timers, led by Raymond Hicks
against a team led by his son,
Howard, which included the
young “Whippersnappers.” The
team of Raymond and his old-
sters, easily defeated the young-
sters. The word that knocked
all of them out was “apocalyse.”
‘The contest to determine the
best song leaders ended with a
tie between Clara Mansfield, Ira
Garrison, and those “Aggies”
Dickie and Howard Hicks, who
sang the “Spirit of Aggieland.”
The biggest handshaker turn-
ed out to be Leslie Wantzloeben,
who is married to the former
Shirley Hicks of Bandera.
Elpia Padgett easily won the
honors for knowing the history
of the Hicks Clan.
A beautiful memorial service
was given by the Rev. James
Rogers pastor of the Medina
Baptist Church for the four who
died during the year. The main
person being honored was Her-
cilia Meadows who died in Feb-
ruary and had attended the Me-
dina Baptist Church for 80 years.
“She sometimes in her last
years showed up at the church
on other days besides Sunday, and
sometimes I thought that she
was begining to believe that
every day was the Lord’s Day.”
He further stated, “Tho last
time that I visited the nursing
home where she was staying,
I noticed that she had her bag
packed and when I asked her
where she was going she replied,
■‘I am going home,’ she did too
the next week—she went home
to her reward, after a life well
spent.”
