With the school year be-
hind them and summer on
their minds, HISD admin-
istrators, teachers and staff
gathered at Woolls Interme-
diate School cafeteria for
closing ceremonies on Fri.,
June 6. The HHS jazz band,
along with the band direc-
tors, provided upbeat music
as everyone found their seats.
Dr. A’Lann Truelock, su-
perintendent, introduced
the Board of Trustee mem-
bers and thanked them for
their dedication, support
and caring for students,
teachers and administrators.
She then introduced special
guest, Sterling Martin, who
was on hand to present the
Jimmie Ruth Martin Volun-
teer of the Year award.
Truelock, who began at the
district in November, began
the program with remarks
about how she has enjoyed
her first few months here as
superintendent and what
she has learned. She read her
list of the “Top 10 Things I’ve
Learned Since Coming to
Hondo,” which drew laugh-
ter and applause. Ending
her top 10 list, Truelock’s #1
thing she has learned is that
“Hondo teachers put their
talents, hearts and souls into
every student-every class-
room-every day.”
Service awards for 5,10,20
and 30 years of employment
with HISD were awarded by
Dr. Truelock and Rose Mary
Mares, assistant superinten-
dent. Receiving 5-year cer-
tificates were Ramon “RC”
Contreras, Jr., Gabe Cortez,
Kimberly Cude, Nichole
Garcia, Ramiro Garcia, Jerry
Ibarra, Laurie Keller, Jessica
Luna and Yvonne Rivera.

service, and reaching the 30
year milestone were Gloria
Arcos and Tina Mumme.
The Jimmie Ruth Martin
award for volunteerism was
awarded to Trina Williams. She
was praised for the endless
hours of volunteer time she
puts in at the Meyer, Woolls
and McDowell campuses. Wil-
liams was visibly touched and
very humble about receiving
the award given in memory of
Mrs. Martin.
The Wayne Stein Leader-
ship award was awarded
to Kenneth and Dawn Van
Damme. After a number of
years with the district, the
Van Dammes will be starting
a new adventure teaching at
Gems Academy in Abu Dha-
bi in the fall. Most recently
he has been the principal at
Meyer Elementary and she
has been vice-principal at
Woolls Intermediate.
Retiring teachers, Trish

for their contributions to the
district. Howard, has taught
for 22 years, and 18 of those
have been with HISD. Muen-
nink has taught for 29 years,
26 with HISD. They each re-
ceived a school bell from Su-

All joined in to sing the
school song with retirees
Howard and Muennink
ringing their bells to signify
the ending of the school
year. After an entertaining
video presentation by Meyer
staff and students, a lunch,
