Candidates, incumbents gather for next step in 2014 elections
Over 70 people joined the
Medina County Executive
Board of the Republican Party
and the many of the 2014 Re-
publican candidates last month
at the Hondo Senior/Commu-
nity Center for a patriotic meet
and greet reception, followed
by a brief business meeting as
required by the Election Code,
before candidates drew for po-
sitions on the 2014 Republican
Primary Ballot.
Erich Ehlinger from Devine
was sworn in as the party’s
newest local vice chair. Elis
first job was to assist with
the drawing by shuffling the
deck of Ronald Reagan play-
ing cards to be used by can-
didates to draw their places.
Pat Havel, Helen Delevan and
Martha Ortiz acted as official
secretaries for the drawing.
Local candidates in atten-
dance drew for themselves.
Precinct chairs, vice chairs and
guests took turns drawing for
state and area candidates un-
able to attend. With 73 candi-
dates, the drawing took quite
a while and involved nearly
everyone in attendance.
Congressional hopeful Will
Hurd of Helotes (Dist. 23)
addressed the group. State
Representative candidates
for Dist. 53, Karen Harris of
Bandera and Ron Henneke of
Kerrville, also attended and
presented their qualifications
and visions for the District.
According to Medina Coun-
ty Republican Party Chair
Ann Peden, there are two im-
portant local contested races.
The first is for Medina County
Judge. Candidates are (listed
alphabetically) Keith Lutz of
Hondo and Chris Schuhart
of Rio Medina/Castroville.
Each addressed the assembly,
detailing their qualifications
and plans for the county.
Incumbent County Clerk
Lisa Wernette of Hondo and
challenger Sheila Walters of
Devine offered their qualifi-
cations and information on
their backgrounds.
Candidates running unop-
posed on the primary ballot
were introduced and offered an
opportunity to speak. They in-
cluded sitting officials, County
Court at Law Judge Vivian Tor-
res, District Clerk Cindy Fowl-
er, County Surveyor Charles
Rothe; County Commissioners
Larry Sittre (Pet. 2) and Jerry
Beck (Pet. 4) and Justices of the
Peace Glenn Klaus, Mark Haby,
Clyde “Bubba” Howse and
Phillip Montgomery as well as
County Chairman Ann Peden.
Also unopposed is county trea-
surer candidate Debbie South-
well of Hondo.
The order the names will
appear on the ballot can be
seen at the party website, Me-
dinaCountyRepublicanPartv.
org. Click on candidates, then
select any name in blue for
more information about can-
didates. In addition, forums
are planned for Mico (Jan.
31), Hondo (Feb. 4), Castro-
ville (Feb. 15) and Devine
(date to be determined).
