The Brownwood Lions chalked
up five runs in the bottom of the
third inning and Seth Owen fanned
11 batters in a 6-3 victory over the
Llano Yellow Jackets Lriday at Mor-
ris Southall Lield.
The victory was the third in a row
for the second-place Lions (13-8,
3-1) — all coming in district action
after Brownwood dropped its 8-3A
opener to Liberty7 Hill.
Trailing 2-1 heading to the bot-
tom of the third, Brownwood’s Bry-
ant McDaniel led off and reached
on one of three Llano errors.
Owen followed with a double pri-
or to three consecutive run produc-
ing hits. Cojo Guidry singled up the
middle to score the Ding run, Scott
Kinzler bunted home the go-ahead
run and Justin Osteen followed
with an RBI base hit to right field.
Trent Carlton then walked ahead
of back-to-back RBI ground outs
from Elijah Salazar and Emilio Sala-
zar, which capped the scoring.
Brownwood scored its first run in
the bottom of the second as Carlton
singled with one out and scored on
an RBI infield single by Emilio Sala-
zar with two outs in the inning.
Llano jumped out to a 2-0 lead in
the top of the second inning thanks
to three hits, including back-to-back
RBI singles with one out in the in-
ning.
Aside from the three-hit second
inning, Owen allowed just two hits
the rest of the contest. Osteen came
on in relief to record the final out
in the seventh as Llano scored once
and loaded the bases after the first
two outs were recorded, but left the
tying runs stranded.
The Lions will be back in action
at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they host
Burnet.

Llano closed to within 3-1 in the top of fourth as the only

the fifth as Burkett tripled into the right field corner with one
out and later scored on an RBI ground out by Halie Hipsher.

GEORGETOWN — The Howard
Payne Lady Jackets slipped below
the .500 mark for the season after
dropping a non-conference softball
doubleheader, 4-2 and 4-3, at South-
western Lriday.
The Lady Jackets (13-14) did not
score until their final at-bat in the
opener against Southwestern (20-8),
while the nightcap saw HPU’s rally fall
short in the seventh inning after giving
up the go-ahead runs in the bottom of
the sixth.
In the second game, HPU grabbed
a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an
RBI single by Tylene Middleton that
plated Katie Poemer.
Southwestern tallied single runs in
the second and third innings before
the Lady Jackets drew even at 2 in the
top of the fifth as Evangelina Tellez
singled home Poemer.
Southwestern claimed a 4-2 lead into
the bottom of the sixth on an error —
one of four committed by HPU — and
an RBI single.
In the seventh, Poemer doubled with
one out and Tellez followed with a
walk. With two outs, Haleigh Caraway
came through with an RBI single, but
Southwestern retired the next batter to
escape with the win.
The Lady Jackets finished with eight
hits, led by three from Poemer — who
also scored three runs — two each
from Middleton and Caraway and one
from Tellez.
Caraway tossed all six innings, allow-
ing two earned runs on six hits with
one strikeout and two walks.
In Friday’s opener, HPU collected 10
hits but did not push a run over the
plate until the seventh inning.

13 hits against Keeley Lowrance —
who stmck out three and walked one
— scored once in the first and fifth
innings and twice in the fourth.
Carissa Zarate homered to center
field to lead off the seventh inning for
HPU, while Gober singled home Mid-
dleton, who doubled with two outs.
Gober and Caraway finished with
three hits apiece for the Lady Jackets,
followed by two from Zarate and one

April 5-6 when it visits Texas Lutheran
