MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
Ex-lion Miller receives All-Star snub
CONTRIBUTED PHOTO
Nine wins, the 12th-best ERA in the National League and more than 100 strike-
outs were not enough to get Shelby Miller onto the NL All-Star team.
BY DERRICK STUCKLY
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
derrick.stuckly@brownwoodbulletin.com
Despite a 9-6 record, a 2.80
ERA — which ranks 12 th among
National League starters — and
107 strikeouts to just 24 walks
over 99.2 innings, former Brown-
wood Lion Shelby Miller was not
one of the 13 pitchers selected
to the National League All-Star
team Saturday.
The St. Louis Cardinals, with
a 52-34 record that leaves
them one game back of the
NL Central-leading Pittsburgh
Pirates (53-33), received five
all-star selections — starting
catcher Yadier Molina, starting
outfielder Carlos Beltran, pitcher
Adam Wainwright and reserves
Allen Craig at first base and Matt
Carpenter at second base — but
the rookie Miller was a snub.
Along with Wainwright, pitch-
ers selected to the NL All-Star
team included San Lrancisco’s
Madison Bumgarner, Cincin-
nati’s Aroidis Chapman, Ari-
zona’s Patrick Corbin, Miami’s
Jose Lemandez, Pittsburgh’s
Jason Grilli and Jeff Locke, New
York’s Matt Harvey, Los Angeles’
Clayton Kershaw, Atlanta’s Craig
Kimbrel, Philadelphia’s Cliff
Lee, Chicago’s Travis Wood and
Washington’s Jordan Zimmer-
mann.
Miller is coming off a 12-2
Wednesday victory over the
Los Angeles Angels in which
he tossed six innings of five-hit
ball, allowing two runs with six
strikeouts and a pair of walks.
In three of his previous four
starts, however, Miller, came
out on the losing end in defeats
against Oakland (6-1 on June
28), Texas (4-2 on June 22) and
the New York Mets (5-1 on June
12).
Earlier this season, Miller’s
name was surfacing as the pos-
sible NL Rookie of the Year and
a potential All-Star Game starter.
At one point, Miller owned a 7-3
record and he sported an ERA
below 2.00 until mid-June.
In his brief Major League
Baseball career, Miller owns a
10-6 record with a 2.62 ERA, 123
strikeouts and 28 walks in 113.1
innings, which spans 18 starts
dating to September of 2012.
TEXAS TEEN-AGE BASEBALL ASSOCIATION
District tournaments set to begin Monday
BY DERRICK STUCKLY
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
derrick.stuckly@brownwoodbulletin.com
Berths in the Texas Teen-Age Baseball Asso-
ciation state tournament fields will be at stake
beginning Monday as district tournament action
kicks off for Brown County squads.
Brownwood and Early will each host a district
tournament as the Massey Sports Complex will
be the site of the Boys 10U District 4 tournament,
while the Early City Park will host the Boys 14U
District 2 Tournament. Both tournaments consist
of six teams each.
The tournament in Brownwood features the
most local flare as the field consists of the Brown-
wood Red Sox, Brownwood Giants, Brownwood
Astros, Brownwood Reds, Early Diamondbacks
and Early Gators. A coaches meeting will be held
tonight to determine the bracket for the tourna-
ment.
The winner of the Boys 10U District 4 Tourna-
ment will advance to the 14-team state tourna-
ment July 22 in Temple.
Meanwhile, the schedule is set for the Boys 14U
District 2 Tournament in Early, with all games
taking place on Lield 1.
Action begins Monday with the Comanche Indi-
ans against the San Saba Dillos at 5 p.m., followed
by the Brownwood Athletics against the Brady
Bulldogs at 8 p.m. The Brownwood Mustangs
received a first-round bye and will square off with
the Comanche-San Saba winner at 5 p.m. Tues-
day, while the Early Hurricanes — who also drew
an opening round free pass — will tangle with
the Brownwood Athletics-Brady victor at 8 p.m.
Tuesday.
The tournament is scheduled to conclude at 6
p.m. Lriday with the district championship game.
The top two finishers in the tournament will
advance to the 12-team state event in Hillsboro
on July 22.
Two additional TTAB district tournaments
are being conducted outside Brown County, but
feature a handful of local teams vying for state
tournament berths.
At the Boys 12U District 3 Open Base Tour-
nament in Stephenville, the field includes the
Brownwood Royals, Brownwood Mudcats, Early
Gamecocks, Goldthwaite Eagles and Stephenville
Coyotes, as well as a second team from Stephen-
ville. The lone survivor at the conclusion of the
tournament will earn a spot in the 12-team field
for the state event in Ennis on July 22.
In Hamilton, the Boys 12U District 4 Tight Base
Tournament will feature the Bangs Royals and
Bangs Rangers, along with the Dublin Yankees,
Hamilton Bulldogs, Comanche Rangers and De
Leon Ducks. The top two teams from this tourna-
ment will move on to the nine-team state tourna-
ment in Harker Heights beginning July 22.
Also the week of July 22, Brown County will be
the site of a pair of TTAB state tournaments.
At the Massey Sports Complex in Brownwood,
the 8U Machine Pitch state tournament will be
hosted by qualifying teams the Brownwood Cardi-
nals and Brownwood Giants. Thirteen additional
teams will converge on Brownwood for the week.
The Early City Park, meanwhile, will host the
six-team 8U Player Pitch state tournament. The
field is set as the Early Red Sox, Copperas Cove
Rangers, Cameron Astros, Bosqueville Warriors,
Eustace Mullins and Malakoff Orioles will be fight-
ing for the state title.
Other state tournaments are already set for the
week of July 22, including the 12-team 9U event
which will be held in Eastland. Teams in the field
include the Bangs Indians, Bangs Rangers, East-
land Longhorns, Ballinger Orioles, Ballinger Colts,
Winters Bears, Winters Vipers, Hawley Cowboys,
Hawley Chargers, Colorado City Cubs, Colorado
City Rangers and Presidio Braves.
The 10-team 15U state tournament in Ennis will
be comprised of teams from Brownwood, Ennis,
Miles, Anson, Breckenridge, Roscoe, Stephenville,
Comanche, Monahans and Grapeland.
Also, the TTAB High School Eligible state tour-
nament is scheduled for July 19-21 in Hillsboro.
The field has not been finalized, but in years past
Brownwood and Bangs have sent teams to the
event.

BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
james.david@brownwoodbulletin.com
Manny Ramirez arrived
in Round Rock Thursday to
take batting practice with
the Round Rock Express,
the Triple A affiliate of the
Texas Rangers.
Ramirez reminds me of
2007, a year the Rangers
brought back Sammy Sosa
for his last season. Sosa,
who achieved fame with
Mark McGuire in the now
steroid tarnished 1998
home run race to beat Roger
Maris’ record of 61 home
runs in the regular season,
was returning home to the
club which drafted him in
1988.
I went to the ballpark that
day, as Sosa played his last
MLB game and hit his 600th
home run against the Chi-
cago Cubs, the team from
which he gained fame.
The Rangers have a habit
of developing great young
players in their farm clubs
and then letting them go on
to stardom
elsewhere.
Just look
at Chris
Davis, a
promising
young first
baseman.
Two years
ago the
Rangers let
him go in fa-
vor of Mitch
Moreland.
Now Davis
is hitting
.329 with 32
home runs and it isn’t even
the all star break. Rangers
GM Jon Daniels is to blame
for that one.
But this time it’s different.
Manny Ramirez, at 41, has
555 career home runs. He
has recently been playing in
a league in Taiwan where he
caught the Rangers atten-
tion by batting .352 with
eight home runs.
I remember well when
Manny left the Red Sox in
2008 and guided the Los
Angeles Dodgers to their
first pennant in a long time.
“Manny Being Manny” was
all the craze, as fans bought
the baseball caps with the
Manny dreadlocks sewn on.
I was stationed in Southern
California at the time, and
managed to make a few
trips to see Manny.
Eccentric and spoiled, he
was suspended by MLB for
50 games for testing posi-
tive for PEDs and he and
the Dodgers parted ways.
He then went to the Tampa
Bay Rays and was promptly
suspended for 100 games
for the same infraction.
Manny declared he would
rather retire from baseball
then serve the suspension.
He changed his mind and
landed at the Triple A af-
filiate of the Oakland A’s
last year after serving the
remainder of the suspen-
sion.
He returns to find a Rang-
ers team in desperate need
of a spark. Josh Hamilton
was one of my favorites, but
it seems his eccentricities
in Anaheim with the Angels
have started to wear on
manager Mike Sciosca. He
would have been better off
staying here, but I digress.
The bridge has been burned.
Who else were the Rang-
ers too cheap to sign? Let’s
see, does Yankee slugger
Mark Teixeira come to mind
anyone? They won’t have
that problem with Manny as
he is just eager to get back
into baseball and signed for
the minor league minimum.
First thing the Rangers
told him to do was get a
haircut. Not the famous
dreadlocks! Is that like
Sampson losing his mojo?
We will see.
Even designated hitter
Lance Berkman and catcher
A.J. Pierzynski are on board
with the signing. Manny
makes his debut today in
Round Rock, haircut and all.
If he hits like the Manny of
old, he may be around Ar-
lington to help the Rangers
down the stretch. Maybe the
Rangers will let him grow
his hair back again.
In a interview with MLB.
com Manny said “I never
think this is going to be
my last shot. I like to enjoy
it, go have fun and let the
moment take care of itself ...
Why not keep going?”
Indeed, why not. With the
hot August heat coming up,
the Rangers are in the fight
of their lives in the AL West.
Even Berkman isn’t opposed
to trading time with Manny
at the DH spot. Berkman,
who also occasionally plays
first base, said that every
good bat in the lineup will
help.
Not every one is certain
about Manny’s comeback,
however. Dodgers manager
Don Mattingly said Friday
that “I don’t know, you
never know what Manny
you’re going to get. He may
show up ready to roll.”
“I feel good and I’m ready
to go,” Ramirez said Friday.
“I’m expecting to stay back
[at the plate], use my hands
and do what I always do
stretch, run and get ready
for the game. [My hands] are
still quick. I’ve still got it.”
For those interested,
Ramirez makes his debut
for the Round Rock Express
at 7:05 tonight against
Omaha.
If you’ve never been to
Dell Diamond, I highly
recommend it. Tickets
are cheap, the stadium
is among the best in the
minor leagues and you get
to watch future Rangers
and has beens alike struggle
to get back to the major
leagues.
