JOBS
CONTINUED FROM 1
are assigned to work that
day, Posey and other law-
men said.
“It’s a normal day, usu-
ally,” Posey said. “Normally
it’s fairly quiet.”
If it’s their day to work,
several officers who were
interviewed said, they don’t
like being away from their
families on Christmas Day
— but they understand it’s
going to happen.
“You don’t really like it,
but it’s just part of the job,”
Posey said.
Deputy Billy Arp agreed,
saying “it’s hard to leave
your family at the house.”
But “it’s part of the job,”
Arp said. “You know that
when you take the job.”
Arp didn’t recall any
eventful Christmas Day
shifts. “Most of the time it’s
a typical day for the most
part,” Arp said.
Posey and Arp both work
in the warrants and trans-
port division, an assign-
ment that means they no
longer work Christmas and
other holidays.
Brownwood Assistant
Police Chief James Fuller
no longer works Christmas
and other holidays either.
But Fuller worked plenty of
them when he was a patrol
officer, badge number 622.
“It was boring,” Fuller said
of the Christmas Day shifts.
He would have an occa-
sional domestic disturbance
to work, and on patrol, he
checked businesses and
commercial buildings to
make sure they were secure.
“Holidays are kind of like
Sunday, with less traf-
fic,” Fuller said. “It’s just
calmer.”
If you’re a law officer and
you work Christmas Day,
Fuller said, you probably
celebrate Christmas when
you get off work.
“If you’re a cop and you
expect to have holidays off,
you’re fooling yourself,”
Fuller said. “Police officers
know that. “It’s part of
being a police officer. You
miss your own birthday and
anniversary if it’s your time
to work.”
Early Police Chief David
Mercer said Christmas Day
is a normal day of rotating
patrol shifts. Schedules are
made far in advance so of-
ficers and their families can
plan accordingly, Mercer
said.
When Mercer worked as
a sheriff’s deputy, his shift
fell on Christmas, Thanks-
giving and other holidays
“many, many times.”
“You miss being their for
the kids and getting up on
Christmas morning,” Mercer
said.
Mercer said it’s usually a
calm day that might involve
a DWI arrest — although
one Christmas Day years
ago, Mercer ended up re-
sponding to a murder scene
as a deputy.
Brownwood Fire Chief
Del Albright is another first
responder who no longer
has to work Christmas and
holidays — but from the
time he was 17 up until a
few years ago, he worked
plenty of them.
“All of us have been there,
done that,” said Albright,
whose career has encom-
passed the Air Force, law
enforcement and the fire
service.
“It’s actually been kind
of weird having holidays
off. I got used to (work-
ing Christmas Day) pretty
quick. It‘s another day for
us,” Albright said.
Firefighters and their
families have to plan Christ-
mas around the firefighters’
schedules, Albright said.
If he did work Christmas
"fynxiMi Qua fyajiuhj, to- %/auAA."

Day, he’d have the next day
to look forward to when
he and his family could
celebrate Christmas.
Albright said he did end
up at some Christmas Day
fires, and seeing a family’s
loss “on that special day
of the year kind of gets to
you.”
Crystal Dowell, a regis-
tered nurse since 1999,
works at Brownwood Re-
gional Medical Center and
has experienced Christmas
Day shifts. For the medical
staff that’s on duty Christ-
mas Day, “we want to make
it happy. We want to make
it cheerful,” Dowell said.
“You can go in and wish
(patients) a merry Christ-
mas.”
Dowell recalled working a
Christmas Day in Hamilton,
when a family of five was
brought into the emergency
room after an auto accident.
For the medical staff
treating the victims, Dowell
said, there was no sense at
the time that it was Christ-
mas. “Your skills kick in,”
Dowell said.
Dowell said nursing
means more than taking
care of the physical body
— it involves the whole
person.
“Nursing’s not just a job,"
Dowell said. “It’s something
you do because your inner
soul has put you there. It’s
your calling.”
