SPECIAL TO THE BULLETIN
A total of 126 players reported for
the first football practice of the season
for the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets on
Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets arrived campus on
Wednesday and took the field for their
first workout on Thursday in 100-plus
degree weather. First-year head coach
Roger Geise and his staff are looking to
revive the program and are excited about
the 83 freshmen and transfers that will
complement the 43 returnees this year.
“I am very excited in the athletic abil-
ity of this year’s freshman class,” Geise
said. “This freshman class is better than
we expected and there will be some that
will make a contribution on the field this
season.”
Howard Payne returns nine players on
offense and six on defense. Returning
starting quarterback Thomas Head and
kicker Mitchell Bailey lead the group of
43 returnees.
Head played in eight games and started
the last several for the Yellow Jackets,
throwing for 383 yards with three touch-
downs. He also rushed for 298 yards
with one touchdown. Bailey, who was an
honorable mention all-conference selec-
tion in 2009, brings experience to the
kicking game.
Adrian Lighteard is also a key offensive
returnee at running back. Lighteard ran
for a team-high 681 yards with three
touchdowns in 2011 and caught 10
passes including a pair of touchdowns.
“The returners have retained almost
all of what we went over offensively
and defensively in the spring, which will
make for a smooth transition to start the
season,” Geise added.
The Yellow Jackets, who are coming off
a 1-9 campaign, open the season on Sept.
1 at Trinity. Southwest Assemblies of
God opens the home schedule on Sept.
8, while Howard Payne will visit Louisi-
ana College on Sept. 29 in the American
Southwest Conference opener.
