Defense doses in Rocha trial; dosing arguments expected
BY STEVE NASH
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
Steve, nash @ brownwoodbu lletin.com
The defense rested early Monday
afternoon in the capital murder
trial of Pedro Rocha Jr., bringing an
end to the testimony and evidence
brought before a 35th District
Court jury.
Attorneys from the prosecution
and defense will present their clos-
ing arguments beginning at 9 a.m.
Tuesday.
Rocha is one of four men
charged in the December 2009
shooting death of Ronald Philen in
Brownwood.
As he did during his opening
statement last Tuesday and in
his cross-examination of state s
witnesses, defense attorney Todd
Steele focused Monday on the
crime scene at 1606 Ninth and the
Brownwood Police Department s
development of Philen s brother,
Randall, as the sole suspect. The
district attorney’s office pros-
ecuted Randall Philen in a Novem-
ber 2011 trial on the theory that
he killed his brother following
an argument and staged a crime

The Jimmy Sr. and Terri Valdez
family grew by one today, upon their
adoption of 2-year-old Jace. That
brings the number to 10, including
eldest son Jimmy Jr., daughter Jenni-
fer McCoy, son-in-law Jared McCoy,
and granddaughter, Addison McCoy.
The entire Valdez family celebrated
their latest adoption at the Child
Welfare Board of Brown County s
luncheon, joined by members of
CPS, CASA, and the Family Services
Center. Jace is now the youngest of
four children, adopted by the family.
The Valdez’s first adopted Josh, age
12, along with his biological sister
Jaylee, 6, and Jordan, 7.
Jace came into the family s home
when he was only two months old,
through the foster care program. In
fact, all four of the younger children
were previously foster children,
in the Valdez home. Since they
began taking in children in 2000,
the Valdez s have fostered close to

BY STEVE NASH
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
Steve, nash @ brownwoodbu lletin.com
Brown County Com-
missioners approved the
purchase of a base that
includes a monitoring sys-
tem for 16 cameras at the
county s juvenile lockup
in their Monday meeting.
The purchase, for
$7,350, will be from
Installation Specialists of
Texas in Granbury.
The juvenile lockup has
never had a camera sys-
tem since it was moved
into a section of the
former Unit 2 of the Ron
Jackson school, commis-
sioners were told. When
the state closed Unit 2
and moved out, they
took everything that was
not nailed down includ-
ing monitors, Brown
County Judge Ray West
said.
