HPU to host Lectures in
Chiistian Scriptures event
SPECIAL TO THE BULLETIN
news@ brownwoodbu lletin.com
Howard Payne Univer-
sity’s School of Christian
Studies will host guest
lecturer Dr. Robert R. Ellis,
Phillips Professor of Old
Testament and Hebrew
at Hardin-Simmons
University, during HPU’s
fall Lectures in Christian
Scriptures from 7 p.m.
to 8:30 p.m. today in the
Richard and Wanda Jack-
son Conference Room of
HPU’s Paul and Jane Meyer
Faith and Life Leadership
Center. The event is free
and open to the public.
Dr. Ellis’s presentation
is titled “Amos: Prophet
of Economic Justice for
Our Day.” Dr. Donnie
Auvenshine, dean of HPU’s
School of Christian Stud-
ies, calls this a “timely
topic.”
“Dr. Bob Ellis does a
great job of applying the
words of the Old Testa-
ment prophets to our con-
temporary circumstances
and situations,” said Dr.
Auvenshine. “Given the
widespread discussion of
economic issues, including
economic justice issues,
this should be an insight-
ful and thought-provoking
lecture.”
Dr. Ellis is the brother of
Dr. Bill Ellis, HPU presi-
dent. For more informa-
tion about the event,

Mission Possible Kids collecting
wrapped candy for soldiers
SPECIAL TO THE BULLETIN
news@ brownwoodbu lletin.com
Mission Possible Kids will be collecting
left over wrapped candy for soldiers. They
are willing to pick up candy but will also
have collection bins at First United Meth-
odist Church beginning today until Nov. 6.
Please call Randee Green, (325) 642-1202
if you need Mission Possible Kids to pick
up candy.
Mission Possible Kids will be collect-
ing and sending all candy to the nation
wide program called Operation Gratitude.
Operation gratitude sends individual care
packages to soldiers deployed in vari-
ous combat zones throughout the world.
The care packages include items such as
hygiene products, magazines and letters
of appreciation from school children as
well as handmade cards and pictures. The
letters build morale. These boxes also
include candy collected during Hallow-
een. The candy is used as a tool to foster
community relations with local village
children, and is also given to them as “cur-
rency” in exchange for information that
frequently saves the lives of U.S. soldiers.
This candy is not only a sweet treat from
home, but is also given to the local village
children, who in exchange tell the soldiers
life-saving information about enemy troop
positions, IEDs (Improvised Explosive
Devices), and other important intelligence.
The candy saves lives!
Mission Possible Kids is nonprofit dedi-
cated to empowering kids to change the
world through helping others.
