END OF THE ROAD
District 7-3A champion Stephenville eliminates Lady Lions in straight sets
DERRICK STUCKLY | BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
Kayli Waddle (12) finished with six kills and one block for the Brownwood Lady Lions in Monday’s 25-15, 25-18,
25-11 bi-district playoff loss to Stephenville in Dublin.

BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
derrick.stuckly@brownwoodbulletin.com
DUBLIN — Some days you just
run into a better team.
For the District 8-3A fourth
seed Brownwood Lady Lions, that
proved to be the case in their Re-
gion I-3 A bi-district battle against
the District 7-3A champion Ste-
phenville Honeybees Monday night.
The Lady Lions, who were return-
ing to the playoffs following a
one-year absence, were dealt a 25-
15, 25-18, 25-11 loss, and finished
their first season under head coach
Lorrie Beelby at 12-21 — a seven-
victory improvement over the 2012
campaign.
“Stephenville is very talented at
every position, very athletic, they’re
just a good, solid volleyball team
and obviously that’s why they
won their district,” Beelby said. “I
thought we did some very good
things tonight. We worked on some
things in practice and implemented
them. We tried to work on some
different things as far as being able
to score some points. They were
probably taller than us by about
five or six inches at every position
up front, but I thought my girls did
a good job and fought. That’s all I
could ask of them.”
On the offensive end, the Lady
Lions received six kills from Kayli
Waddle and three from Maddie
Oines, while Naomi Rosato dished
out seven assists and Paxton
Vaughn chipped in three. At the
service line, Josie McClung record-
ed a pair of aces trailed by one each
from Rosato and Alley Jowers.
On the defensive end, Jennifer
Martinez chalked up 17 digs and
McClung added nine, while Waddle
and Vaughn were each credited
with one block.
In the opening set, Brownwood
tied the score at 1 but never lead,
falling into an early 7-3 hole. Down
12- 7 at one point, the Lady Lions
charged to close the gap to two,
13- 11, on a kill by Waddle. Ste-
phenville quickly reestablished a
comfortable margin at 16-11, but
the Lady Lions trimmed the deficit
to three, 16-13, on another Waddle
kill.
Following a Stephenville timeout,
the Lady Lions surrendered five
consecutive points to fall behind
21-13 and never recovered.
The Lady Lions couldn’t have
asked for a much better start to
the second set, scoring six of the
first seven points behind the solid
serving of McClung. Vaughn and
Oines added kills during the open-
ing surge.
Stephenville, however, quickly
regrouped and grabbed a 9-8 lead.
A kill by Cynthia Ibarra allowed
Brownwood to knot the score at 12,
but the Honeybees chalked up the
next four points and slowly pulled
away.
“We did start out well, but that
set was a testament to our whole
year,” Beelby said of the second
set. “We’ve been on a roller coaster.
We had too many unforced errors
again tonight, which is something
we’ve tried to cut down on all year.”
Brownwood never found its
rhythm in the final set, allowing
seven of the first nine points en
route to a 13-4 deficit at the mid-
way point of the final set.
Despite the loss, Beelby is proud
of the accomplishments of the Lady
Lions, who started the season at
1-8, yet reached the playoffs.
“This is the most fun I’ve had
coaching a group of girls,” Beelby
said. “They’re awesome, precious
young ladies and I wish them the
very best.”
