County opts against grant
for Sheriff’s Office
By Missy Zinsmeyer
Anvil Herald Correspondent
Medina County Com-
missioners court dis-
cussed the possibility of
making application for
a COPS grant that would
fund three newly hired or
recently laid off, full-time,
sworn officer positions in
the Sheriff’s Office. The
grant would cover 75 per-
cent of the salaries with
the county contributing
the remaining 25 percent.
The maximum amount
the grant would fund is
$41,666 per officer. Al-
though the funding would
discontinue after three
years, the county would be
obligated to keep the po-
sitions permanently and
fund them 100 percent.
During the discussion
of the grant details, Pet.
3 Commissioner David
Lynch said, “I’m a little
concerned about having
a grant dictate what our
staffing will be for here
on out.” Pet. 1 Commis-
sioner Richard Saathoff
said, “Judge, I don’t see this
thing flying.”
Judge Jim Barden said,
“It would be nice to have
the money to help pay
for the addition, but the
handcuffs that come with
it don’t make me comfort-
able at all.”
With no motion made
and no action taken, the
agenda item failed. Judge
Barden said, “I guess if we
have to fund something
(more employee salaries), I
guess we will have to fund
it ourselves through the
budget process.
