WELCOME BACK TEACHERS!... McDowell Middle School’s version of the Village People, complete with backup dancers,
earned second place Monday in the Dancing With the Owls contest during the Hondo ISD’s Welcome Back Barbecue at
Nooner’s Pavilion. Each of the four campuses competed for the highly coveted trophy, with the high school crew (“Gang-
nam Style” featuring lead performer, Principal Jim Angst), edging the middle school team’s “YMCA”. The school board even
got into the action with their rendition of “The Hokey Pokey.” Pictured as the Village People are, from left: Robert Valadez
as the biker, Assistant Principal Edgar Camacho as the Indian chief, Principal Steve Alvarado as the construction worker,
Steven Rogiers as the soldier, Cy Barr as the cowboy, and district cop, Joey Tapia, as of course, the cop. Backup dancers,
from left, are Diane Pacheco, Mary Zinsmeyer, Ida Arcos, Patti Barrientes and Janet Groff.
Press box named
for Dr. Jennings
At Monday’s Hondo ISD
board meeting, trustees
voted to named the Barry
Field press box after John
“Nonnie” Jennings.
Dr. Jennings served as
the stadium announcer
at Barry Field for 43 years,
from 1952 through 1994,
without ever missing a
home Friday night. He
passed away in May.
To obtain proper signage
for the press box, includ-
ing a permanent plaque at
the south entrance of the
booth, the district will be
raising funds in the coming
weeks and months.
Anyone wishing to con-
tribute may send a check
to: Hondo ISD, Nonnie Jen-
nings Press Box Fund, RO.
Box 308, Hondo, TX 78861.
Please make sure to
make a proper notation on
the check.

The Hondo Independent
School District is keeping the
property tax rate at the same
level as last year.
At the August board of
tmstees meeting Monday
afternoon, the board voted
to keep the rate at $1.14 per
$100 valuation.
That follows up the board’s
adoption earlier in the sum-
mer of a $16,081,109 budget
for the 2013-14 school year.

• The period for filing ap-
plications for the permanent
Hondo ISD Superintendent’s
position ended on Thurs-
day. Twenty-four individuals
submitted applications, with
none from the HISD. The
search committee will begin
to review the applications on
August 30 and begin setting
up interviews.
• The security project at
Meyer Elementary School is
nearly complete.
“The campus has been se-
cured,” said Assistant Superin-
tendent Rose Mary Mares. “We
have fencing all around the
campus (photo below), and
we’re seeking bids for security
cameras at both Meyer and the
high school.”
She added that both Mc-
Dowell Middle School and
Woolls Intermediate School
have had security cameras in-
stalled in the past two years.
“We want to continue ef-
forts to ensure that our kids
and staff are in the safest en-
vironment possible.”
• The board reviewed the
district’s student handbook
and athletic handbook, with
no major changes in either.
• One correction was made
in the district’s extracurricular
stipends, because one person
had been left off the list.
• The board accepted three
resignations, from Woolls In-

SECURITY FENCE ADDED TO MEYER... Wrought-iron security fencing has been installed
this month at Meyer Elementary School, as shown along the side corridor facing 24th Street.
Crews were painting the fence on Wednesday. The fence is part of a district-wide security
upgrade.
WATER SPOUT... Tax office personnel noticed water bubbling up from the asphalt at the
corner of 15th Street and Avenue K on Wednesday, Aug. 21. A city crew, headed by Fore-
man Robert Tapia, was on the scene with a backhoe to investigate. Digging at the site
released pressure on the water line and an ensuing water spout erupted. The crew was in
the process of repairing the leak at press time.

• In the coming weeks,
distrcit personnel, including
Interim Superintendent Ann
Dixon, will be making the
rounds in the community to
gauge the feelings of citizens
regarding needed upgrades
to the Hondo ISD.
Enough positive responses
could lead to a bond election
in the district’s near future.
Earlier this year, a district
planning committee came
up with its priority wish list
for district improvements.
