Trustees
take no
action in
probe on
grievance
Taryn Walker
Reporter
After more than five hours
of deliberation during a closed
session, the Port Aransas In-
dependent School District
Board of Trustees took no
action regarding a current
investigation.
On Wednesday, Jan. 22,
trustees met in a special meet-
ing to discuss what is pre-
sumed to be an investigation
of PAISD nurse Melissa Rams-
den’s grievance against Super-
intendent Dr. Sharon Doughty,
although administration has
declined to confirm what in-
vestigation was discussed.
Four individuals, including
former school board member
Ann Appling, Ramsden, her
husband and a South Jetty
reporter, waited at the PAISD
administration building for
the board to return to open
session.
Twice, trustee and board
secretary Jay Jones called for
the Ramsdens to have a word.
The first time, Melissa
Ramsden joined the board
during the closed session,
according to her husband,
Tom, and was gone for about
an hour. Ramsden then came
out of the meeting and left the
building to get a document,
she said.
When asked why Ramsden
attended the closed session,
Board of Trustees president
Michele Lorette said, “It was
all closed session,” and had no
other comment.
The school board agenda
stated that the closed meeting
included “Consultation with
legal counsel regarding legal
issues pertaining to an ongo-

Alien invader
A tour group approaches a Brazilian pepper tree at the Port Aransas Nature Preserve
at Charlie’s Pasture on a recent day. The pepper trees are an invasive species that has
multiplied over large portions of the preserve in recent years and threatens to engulf acres
of grassland, squeezing out native species.
Grant and conference
to address pepper trees
Dan Parker
Reporter
Port Aransas is about to
deliver a one-two punch in
the battle against the invasive
Brazilian pepper trees that
have infested the town.
• The City of Port Aransas
has been awarded a $50,000
grant to help the town control
the bushy plants that have
multiplied like wildfire in
recent years, squeezing out
native plant species. As part of
the grant, the city will become
part of the first area in Texas
deemed a Cooperative Weed
Management Area, which
is expected to provide Port
Aransas and nearby regions
with additional opportunities
to win still more money to
help battle the spread of pep-
per trees.
• The University of Texas
Marine Science Institute will
host the state’s annual Texas
Invasive Plant and Pest Con-
ference, which is expected
to include a lot of discussion
about pepper trees, Feb. 26 to
28. But the event won’t just
involve talk. It will include a
pre-conference “work party”
in which participants will get
their hands dirty, ripping out
some of the pepper trees that
have spread around the Port
Aransas Nature Preserve at
Charlie’s Pasture. The Texas
A&M Forest Service is expect-
ed to bring in heavy equip-
ment to deal with stumps.
Mayor Keith McMullin
was happy to hear the news
about the grant. He has sought
funds for pepper tree control,
along with other Port Aran-
sas needs, each year he has
traveled to Washington D.C.
and met with Coastal Bend
delegates to talk about what
the town wants from Congress
and federal agencies.
