Feast of Sharing blesses hundreds in area

Dr. John Fink of Hondo
was one of the organizers of
the community Thanksgiv-
ing Feast of Sharing held last
Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran
Church’s Activity Center. Dr.
Fink and Jean Callaway of
Medina County Meals-On-
Wheels actually began put-
ting the event together in Oc-
tober of 2011, knowing that
a huge amount of planning
would be necessary to pull off
such an ambitious project.
With the help of more
than 100 volunteers rang-
ing from young children to
senior citizens from area
churches and service orga-
nizations, more than 410
plates were served or deliv-
ered. The menu consisted
of turkey, gravy, dressing,
cranberry sauce, sweet po-
tatoes, green beans, a roll,
pie and coffee, tea or water.
Cub Scouts andpacklead-
ers did the home deliveries,
as did some of the regular
volunteer drivers for the nu-
trition center. “The Rotary
sent some volunteers, and
the hospital, churches...
people showed up from out
of the woodwork!
“We certainly would have
liked to have served more,
but we’re satisfied with
what we did,” said Fink.
“Everyone was invited, and
the Senior Nutrition Center
with Jean Callaway was very
integral in the planning
phases as well as plating
meals, providing coolers -
all on their day off.”
Law enforcement person-
nel as well as jail employees
and prisoners were treated
to the delicious dinner, de-
livered to the county jail.
About two dozen truck driv-
ers lined up waiting to load/
unload near South Texas
Liquid Terminal, unable to
leave their place in line to
get something to eat, were
surprised and gratified when
volunteers appeared at their
doors with meals for them.
Annie Wiemers enlisted
the help of second graders
in Hondo to color placemats
for the tables decorated for
those dining at St. Paul’s.
Looking ahead to Thanks-
giving 2013, Fink said, “I
think it would be a good
idea,” however he remarked
that if someone wanted to
spearhead the effort next
year, he would be more
than happy to give them
his notes and lists of who
donated and what was do-
nated. “But if no one wants
to step forward, I probably
will do it.
“Anything that helps any
part of Hondo, helps all of
Hondo, and any act of love
changes people,” he added.
“That’s what this was. It’s not
about the food, it’s about the
love of the community.
Hondo HS Career Day well-received

Hondo-D’Hanis Rotarians Chris Young of Community Financial Planning (above, left) and
Jean Callaway of Medina County Nutrition Center (above, center back) interacted with Hon-
do and D’Hanis high school students last week at HHS’s Activity Center.
Richard Saathoff answered questions and provided information regarding his work as the
Medina County Commissioner for Precinct 1.
Hondo High School students,
grades 9-12, and D’Hanis ju-
niors and seniors participated
in Career Day last week at HHS.
Sponsored by Hondo-D’Hanis
Rotary Club, the students had
an opportunity to talk with
professionals, electied officials
and representatives from vari-
ous businesses in the Hondo
area, as well as city, state and
law enforcement personnel
over the course of the morn-
ing.
HHS counselor Lauren
Busse noted that the students
espcially enjoyed talking with
District Attorney Daniel J. Kin-
dred, adding, “they got to try
on a bullet-proof vest and talk
to one of the investigators, so
they really liked that.” They
also were interested in Medina
Regional Hospital, and some
expressed interest in volun-
teering there, she said. “They
seemed to like it.”
Busse felt the event was suc-
cessful and expects that there
will be another one next year. “I
think it’s a good opportunity for
our kids to see what’s out there
beyond just college,” she said.
“They can see the college as-
pect, but what do you do when
you (graduate)? What do you
want to do?”
Participants were South Texas
Regional Airport, Community

Community National Bank,
D’Hanis State Bank, District At-
