Will BUILD LEVS
BONDS ISSUED AND SOLD FOB BUILD
ING LEVEE ON LITTLE RIVER
IN MILAM COUNTY
The bonds of the Heflpy Im-
provement District of Milam
County, Texas, were sold toThos.
J. Bolder & Company of Chicago,
for $19,156.25. The bond issue
was for $18,500, five per cent
bonds.
The contract was awarded to
the Texas Building Co. of Fort
Worth for $19,156.25, the
amount for which the bonds
were sold.
The contract calls for the work
to commence immediately and
to be finished by March 1, 1912.
It is for the purpose of con
struct ing a levee along Little Riv-
er beganning at the Don Davis
place, one mile west of the Nor-
man Valley road and termina-
ting at the Holtzclaw bridge em-
bracing 518,000 acres of land.
The levee will be 4 1-2 feet wide
at the top with a height of 7 1-2
feet with 28 foot base con-
taining 122,000 cubic feet of
earth.
The building of this levee will
be a great boom for the river
bottom land, and when it is dem-
onstrated that it is a success, and
there is no question but that it
will be, other districts will be
organized and all of the Little
River bottom land reclaimed.-

The farmers of Goliad County
have adopted a novel and unique
method of building public roads,
which is proving very effective.
The . split-log drags which are
used for keeping the county
roads in good condition are
placed on each road leading out
from the city. Each farmer
coming into town hitches the
drag to his wagon and hauls it
, for a mile or two, leaving it for
j the next farmer, who does like-
wise. In this way the drag is
kept moving all the time and the
j result is good roads and smooth
roads in all kinds of weather.

If the railroads of the country
can spend millions annually in
straightening their roads and
lessening grades and curves,
cannot the farmers, aided by the
people of the cities, as they
would be by bond issues, spend
a few thousands on good roads?
Highways are the farmers’ rail-
ways, and easy transportation
is as essential to the farmer as it
is to the railroad.
