Dead at 91Major Gifts
Recently Received By
Howard Payne University
Two major gifts have been receiv-
ed at Howard Payne University,
Dr. Roger Brooks announced recent-
ly.
A gift of land in Central Texas
which should provide from $40,000
to $50,000 for the school was made
by Mr. Joe T. Lisenbee of Andrews
in memory of his wife, Violet.
The Lisenbee's pastor, Reverend
Carl Grissom, says, "These good
people have been very loyal to the
work of their church and to other
ministries for our Lord. It is fitting
that this gift should honor the
memory of Mr. Lisenbee's wife."
"The other gift,'' Dr. Brooks
stated, "is from Mrs. Raymond
Hankamer, Sr. of Houston in mem-
ory of her parents, Annie and Milton
Miller. Mrs. Hankamer is a gradu-
ate of Howard Payne. The gift of
$50,000 will be added to the school's
fund for endowment to provide
scholarships at Howard Payne
for worthy young men and women
who are dedicated to a lofty purpose
in life."
"These generous gifts", Dr.
Brooks added, "are extremely
valuable to Howard Payne, and we
will be forever grateful to the
donors for their interest and kind-
ness."Annie Shelton, a longtime instruc-
tor at Howard Payne, died January
14, following a four-month illness.
She was 91.
She was born March 9, 1885 in
Lorena and taught history at HP for
50 years before retiring in 1953.
Nicknamed "Miss Annie" by
friends, she graduated from Howard
Payne in 1916. She received her
masters degree from George Wash-
ington University and did graduate
work at Columbia University in
New York.
In October of 1959, along with
her brother, Cap Shelton, she
was honored as a distinguished
alumni at homecoming activities.
Three times, one of them after
she retired, the Lasso was dedicated
to her.
She was on campus when the
Baptist Student Union was formed
and served as its sponsor for 25
years, serving also as a sponsor for
the sophomore class and pep squad.
In 1964, the university conferred
upon Miss Shelton an honorary
doctorate of literature.
A 255-acre farm north of Brown-
wood was donated by Miss Shelton
to Howard Payne in 1959. At that
time she said, "It is a great joy for
me to make this gift. I will always
feel greatly indebted to Howard
Payne for offering me the opportuni-
ties that have enriched my life.
My teaching years were happy
ones
She is survived by three sisters-
in-law, and a number of nieces and
nephews.Vol. XXV No. 2 Spring 1977
