DR. CHARLES A. STEWART
Executive Vice PresidentWe have finished another good year at
the university. Our year end financial
report reveals that, in spite of cost escala-
tion and the adverse effect of inflation, we
finished the year in the black.
The search committee for a new presi-
dent is composed of dedicated, hard-
working trustees determined to select a man
to lead the school to even greater heights.
The search is nationwide in scope. The
search for possible candidates has closed
and the careful selection process of a new
leader for the school has begun.
Campus maintenance is busy this sum-
mer with improvement projects. They are
Lying hundreds of feet of new sidewalks
and paving and resurfacing parking areas.
Harold Mayo, our new head football
coach and athletic director, has completed
his staff. Clyde Alexander has been hired as
football defensive coordinator. Chester
Story, our new basketball coacl, is already
recruiting and looking toward a successful
season. Billy Williams is joining the staff as
assistant basketball coach. We are looking
forward to better things in our entire
athletic program.
We are all pleased and encouraged as we
go into our new school year. It looks great.
Please visit and see for yourself.
Sincerely,
Charles A. StewartFirst Annual

A new but familiar face has been added
to the university relations staff. It belongs
to Steve Evans who is no stranger to the
HPU campus.
A 1977 graduate of Howard Payne, Steve
returns to us from Del Rio where he was
associated with Southwest Films as a photo
lab supervisor. While a student at Howard
Payne, Steve was employed by the universi-
ty relations department as a photographer.
In addition to his duties as assistant
director of university relations, Steve is
pastor of the Locker Baptist Church. He
has written numerous articles which have
been published in HPU, Texas and U.S.
Air Force publications. He has been chosen
as an "Outstanding Young Man of
America, 1979," and is listed in
Personalities of the South, 1979.
Steve and his wife, Carla (Vandiver '77),
have one daughter, Mary Elizabeth.Alumni Assn. Pres.
Urges Exes ParticipationAny responsible review of the life of
Howard Payne University will reveal that
she is one of God's great institutions. Dur-
ing her 90 years of existence Howard Payne
has made an indispensable contribution to
the leadership of the Southwest and of our
nation. She has contributed immeasurably
to the great hosts who have borne Christ's
message to the ends of the earth.
It is the hope that on her 90th birthday all
those who have shared in the great
ministries of this university will insist upon
active participation in, and support of, this
celebration. May we unite and celebrate by
helping with her $90,000 birthday gift and
by making Homecoming a great success.
The alumni association directors met
May I and advanced the formulation of the
plans for observing this significant mile-
post in the life of our beloved school. The
plans are exciting and the prospects are
good for an observance which will be in
keeping with her heritage.
Few among the Howard Payne Universi-
ty alumni would hesitate to testify to her
rich and necessary contribution to our
development for, and placement in, the
ranks of Christian service and American
citizenship. Few would deny that we are
deeply indebted to her for it.
This graduate appeals to the entire family
of Howard Payne and Daniel Baker alumni
to give your individual and collective sup-
port to this 90th anniversary celebration
and to continue your support into the
future. Everyone can help in some way.
You can pray for God's continuing bless-
ings upon her efforts. You can give money.
You can encourage young people to attend
Howard Payne University.
May she count on you?
