HPU continues to climb in U.S. News & World Report rankings
by UNIVERSITY
NEWSSERVICES
Howard Payne is a top-10
university.
Not the football team or the
women's basketball team. It's
the educational ranking of
HPU.
U.S. News and World
Report announced last week
the national rankings for
"America's Best Colleges
2009," placing HPU in the
top 10 of Best Baccalaureate
Colleges in the Western Region
for the first time.Tied for ninth, HPU moved
up five places over the rank-
ing of No. 14 in the same
category last year. HPU is the
only Texas institution to be
named in the 2009 top 10 of
Baccalaureate Colleges within
the Western Region.
HPU also continued to climb
to No. 2 in the Western Regionin the "Best Value" category
of "Comprehensive Colleges
- Bachelor's. HPU was ranked
No. 3 in that category last
year.
"We are elated with our
significant climb in the rank-
ings," said HPU President
Dr. Lanny Hall. "In our plan-
ning, we had set our sightson being in the 'Top Ten' in
the Western Region and it is
most gratifying to see this goal
realized. We are especially
pleased to be recognized as #2
in Best Value in the Western
Region. This distinction takes
into consideration the qual-
ity of the academic program
and the net cost after financial
aid has been applied. We feel
strongly that an HPU educa-
tion is a great value and we are
pleased that U.S. News and
World Report has validated
our belief."
There are 319 comprehen-sive colleges ranked by U.S.
News & World Report with-
in four geographic regions:
North, South, Midwest, and
West. HPU is one of 48 schools
in the western region.
Rankings are determined by
taking the following factors
into account:
Peer Assessment: 25 percent
Retention: 20 percent
Faculty Resources: 20 percent
Student Selectivity: 15 percent
Financial Resources: 10 percent
Graduation Rate Performance:
5 percent
