Congratulations are especially
in order this month to two Howard
Payne groups-the 1961 Lone Star
Conference t r a c k championship
team and the Houston alumni who
held a dinner May 8.
The t r a c k achievement, first
team championship for Howard
Payne in the Lone Star Conference
represents a victory not only for
the team, but for their coach, Ho-
ward Payne's beloved Cap"
Shelton. The conference track meet
will be held at Howard Payne next
spring.
Work is continuing on the col-
lege track, which has officially
been named the J. H. "Cap' Shel-
ton Track. We want to have it
finished by the opening of the
next track season. If any of you
can help with gifts to this project,
we need about $4,000 more to
finish the job.
Thanks go to J. Brown Cutbirth,
Sterling Hogan, Mike Bettis and
others who helped to make our
alumni dinner in Houston a suc-
cess. We had approximately 150
ex-students and some friends of
the college present in the beautiful
River Oaks Country Club.
Among the many ex-students we
saw there were O. Franklin Ether-
edge, head of the game and fish
commission office there; L. H. Horn-
burg, principal of an elementary
school; Miss Cecile E. Lancaster, a
sweet ex-student who served as
missionary to Japan 25 years; Burl
Miller, who is with the post office;
Dr. Marcus D. Murphey, Houston
orthodontist and a brother of Dr.
Willis Murphey who has done such
a fine job in Fort Worth for our
science building fund, and the Rev.
Sheridan Newman, former attorney
who is now an Episcopalian minis-
ter.
There were many, many others
we wish we had space to tell you
about, including Gabriel Fransee,
former faculty member who sang
several numbers for us.

Getting almost super-human ef-
fort from virtually every member
of the team, Howard Payne College
cindermen pulled the upset of the
ages when they won first place in
the 30th annual Lone Star Confer-
ence Track and Field Meet, held in
Commerce in May.
Howard Payne - sweeping to
five first places and getting all-
time top performances in six events
- was responsible for one brokenJ. H. "CAP" SHELTON
... Has Winning Teamrecord and tied another as the
Yellow Jackets claimed the first
LSC team title since HPC joined the
conference in 1957. It meant that
the college finished the 1960-61
athletic year in first division in a l
three major sports. Only other
school in the league claiming this
distinction is Lamar Tech.
It was a fitting gift for coaching
veteran J. H. "Cap'' Shelton who
has been at HPC 42 years. At
least four of his team will represent
HPC and the LSC at the NAIA Meet
of the Champions in June in Siou.,
Falls, S. D.
"We won 15 track and field
championships in the old Texas
Conference, but none were as sweet
as this LSC crown," Shelton said
at the "victory" pep rally on cam-
pus honoring him and his team.
Taking 56 points in the meet,
HPC left Lamar Tech in second
place with 50 /2 points, and East
Texas State-winner in the pastsix straight meets-in third with
48y%.
Top HPC performances were by:
Alfred Holcomb, who threw the
discus 178-8 to set his fourth
straight LSC record and break his
own mark by more than 10 feet.
Seven feet and seven inches better
than any previous throw, it was the
best mark ever turned in by a Tex-
as collegian. He also hit his all-
time high in the shot put ring,
getting a third-place 50- 1/4 per-
formance.
Gary Petross, who equaled the
high hurdles standard with a wind-
aided 14.2 (after trailing over ever/
hurdle), and remained undefea e:d
by a small-college opponent in
1961. He also placed high in the
university hurdles event at the Tex-
as, Kansas and Drake Relays.
Doug Reid, who forged ahead
in the final 100 yards to win the
mile in 4:22.7, against 10-15 mile-
per-hour winds.
The mile relay team - Danny
Keller, Frank Santiago, David Noble
and Lowell Bishop - with a first
place 3:20.3.
Glenn Petty, who won first with
1:55.5, and Frank Santiago, who
won second with 1:55.7, in the 880.
Noble, who took second in the
440 with a career best of 48.9, an .I
Keller, who hit his all-time high o
24-6 in the broad jump for a hear-
breaking runner-up position.
