Students recovering from stab wounds
Incident raises questions about HPU student safety off campusby MATT RAMIREZ
YJ STAFF WRITER
Four Howard Payne stu-
dents and one former stu-
dent are recovering from
stab wounds suffered at an
off-campus residence last
month. However, the inci-
dent serves as a reminder
to HPU students to exercise
caution when venturing off
campus and into the Brown-
wood community.
According to a Brown-
wood Police Department re-port, police were dispatched
to 1811 Main Blvd. at 10:57
p.m. on Feb. 26 in refer-
ence to a citizens' dispute.
Dispatch advised the offi-
cers that there were weap-
ons present at the scene
and some people had been
stabbed.
Upon arrival, police dis-
covered the owner of the
residence and additional
victims "bleeding heavily."
Of the additional victims,
four are current HPU stu-dents and one is a former
HPU student.
According to various ac-
counts, including those of
the victims and the police
report, one of the victims
- the former HPU student
- was at the local carnival
when a female friend ap-
proached him and indicated
that "some guys were scar-
ing her." They were de-
scribed as two males with
which the female "had
problems with in the past."The two males ap-
proached the former HPU
student and his female
friend and appeared con-
frontational. The female be-
came frightened and called
her father, who took the
female and her sister back
to their residence at 1811
Main.
It was at 1811 Main
where a blue car containing
the confrontational males,
with some more accomplic-
es, circled the house severaltimes, prompting the female
to phone her friend - the for-
mer HPU student - for help.
He arrived at 1811 Main
with several of his friends
- most of them apparently
being HPU students.
"We were not looking for
any trouble," said one of the
students who suffered stab
wounds. "We went there to
protect the girls. We weren't

Howard Payne on March
15 began its newest effort
to aid the entire student
body with the operation of
a shuttle bus between the
main campus and Newman
Hall and the Academy of
Freedom, which are sepa-
rated by about a mile.
Last Fall at the Student
Government Association
event Student Speak, a stu-
dent asked HPU President
Dr. Ellis if he and SGA
would consider a new pro-
gram that would grant the
student body public trans-
portation from the main
campus of Howard Payne to
the Newman Hall/Academy
campus.
In January, SGA asked
professors, whose classesmet on these campuses, to
take a poll. This poll mea-
sured the student body's
response to the idea of shut-
tle bus transportation and
how many HPU students
would utilize this option.
Approximately 40 percent
of these students agreed
that, if a shuttle bus system
was available, they would
use it.
The new shuttle bus sys-
tem began operating March
15 and is now a new and
useful resource for students
to use.
The shuttle bus stops at
four stations: the gate by

Music Complex, Packer
Administration Building,
and Newman Hall. The
