Former 2nd lady
Joan Mondale dies
www.baytownsun.com
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Joan
Mondale, who burnished a reputation
as "Joan of Art" for her passionate
advocacy for the arts while her husband
was vice president and a U.S. ambassador,
died Monday. She was 83.
Walter Mondale, sons Ted and
William and other family members
were by her side when she died, the
family said in a statement released by
their church. The family had announced
Sunday that she had gone into hospice
care, but declined to discuss her illness.
"Joan was greatly loved by many.
We will miss her dearly," the former
vice president said in a written statement.
An arts lover and an avid potter,
Joan Mondale was given a grand
platform to promote the arts when
Walter, then a Democratic senator,
was elected Jimmy Carter's vice
president in 1976.
Garry Nelson, third from right, was named volunteer of the year for 2013. From
left are Guido Persiani, Traci Dillard, Patrick Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Gill, Billy
Barnett and Baytown YMCA director Lee Brillhart.
YMCA

Nelson was among 38 other
volunteers who received the 2013
YMCA Volunteer of the Year award,
said Lee Brillhart, Community
Associate Executive Director at the
Baytown YMCA.
“We have a large banquet and
honor them every year at a hotel in
Houston,” said Brillhart. “Every Y
in the association has a volunteer of
the year, so there is usually between
38 and 40 of them.”
Nelson was this year’s obvious
choice because of his long history
with the Baytown facility.
“He and his wife walk the walk
when it comes to membership and
volunteering,” Brillhart said. “He is
on our volunteer board, is a member
of the facility, very active in our
Gator Ride and his contributions to
these things, in addition to our
Partners Campaign, dictate why he
deserves it.”
The YMCA is more than a gym. It
is a place that offers several programs,
including after-school activities and
camps, to youth who otherwise would
have nothing to do. That’s why
Nelson has chosen to volunteer at
the Baytown branch.
“I can guarantee it is always a real
positive experience for them and
one they won’t forget,” Nelson said.
In addition to the Baytown YMCA,
Nelson also volunteers with the Lions
Club of Baytown and Faith Presbyterian
Church.
“Everyone can do things like this
and if they did, it would make our
community a better place.”

The criteria that will be used in
evaluating the proposals, according
to the RFP document, are:
•Identity and development and
management background of principals
of the developer
•Developer’s ability to secure
project financing,
•The public and downtown area
benefit/impact of the proposed
development,
•The scope of restoration, repair
and renovation of the buildings,
•Experience of the developer in
managing the operation of comparable
projects, and
•Developer’s past relationship with
the city.
Written proposals are also to
outline the proposed use of the
property and estimated attendance
or patronage for the first three years
of operation. Potential developers
will also provide a timeline for
meeting several specific milestones,
from preliminary design to grand
opening.
At the Jan. 9 meeting, one group
and one individual presented plans.
Mike Wilson made a presentation
on behalf of Portrait of a Warrior
Memorial Art Gallery. The gallery,
which is the home of artist Ken
Pridgeon’s tribute portraits to Texans
who have given their lives in the
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, is in
need of a much larger space.
Robert B. Martin Jr. made a
presentation for his proposal to
restore the Brunson as a mixed-use
movie and live performance venue,
coupled with redeveloping the adjacent
Citizens Bank building as a Baytown-
themed restaurant.
