Ex-NBA star McGrady tries hand as baseball pitcher
Former Rocket to pitch
for Sugar Land Skeeters
BY KRISTIE RIEKEN
AP Sports Writer
HOUSTON — Tracy McGrady
wants to follow Michael Jordan’s
path to the national pastime.
The retired seven-time NBA
All-Star is aiming to become a
baseball player, and plans to try
pitching for the Sugar Land Skee-
ters of the independent Atlantic
League.
That’s the same team that Rog-
er Clemens pitched for a couple
of years ago.
Jordan famously played in the
Chicago White Sox organization
in 1994 during his first retirement
from basketball, reaching the
Double-A level.
A statement from the Skeeters
says that it is a “lifelong dream”
of McGrady’s to play baseball.
“McGrady has demonstrated
skill, determination and diligence
during his training program,” the
statement said. “We look forward
to monitoring his progress.”
The 34-year-old McGrady
played for several teams, includ-
ing the Houston Rockets and Or-
lando Magic.
He last played in the NBA in
the 2011-12 season.
The Skeeters last made national
headlines when Clemens pitched
two games for them in 2012 at
age 50.
McGrady made seven con-
secutive All-Star games from
2001-07. The 6-foot-8 McGrady,
natural right-hander, was drafted
out of high school with the ninth
overall pick in 1997 by the Toron-
to Raptors.
He spent his first three seasons
with the Raptors before becoming
a star with the Magic.
He spent four years with the
Magic and led the NBA scoring
in both the 2002-03 and 2003-04
seasons.
He then joined the Rockets
where he teamed with Yao Ming
to help Houston to three playoff
appearances.
McGrady played for the
Knicks, Detroit and Atlanta after
a six-year stint with the Rockets.
He retired with more than
18.000 points and more than
5.000 rebounds in his career.

Guide Guy Stansel of
Hackberry Rod and Gun said
he found good fish while
wading soft mud near the ship
channel. The new MirrOure
Soft-Dine has been getting hit
hard.
All reports from Baffin Bay
appear solid. The recent cold
front knocked down water
temperatures a bit, but this
weekend’s warmup should
get large trout back in wad-
able water.
The King Ranch shore-
line and spoil islands near
dropoffs have held many fish
on Corkies, MirrOlures and
soft plastics rigged on light jig
heads. Most fish have been on
a grass and mud mixture.
If cold weather returns, ex-
pect redfish to fill the void.
“The tides have been re-
ally low after the fronts,”
said guide Michael Rolf of
Matagorda. “That just makes
it easier to find reds in the guts
and holes.”
Rolf said the mouths of
lakes have been the hotspots
lately with live shrimp.
The same pattern has held
in Port O’Connor and the Gal-
veston Bay complex. Holes
along the Victoria Barge
Canal near Seadrift and the
Flood Gates in Moses Lake
have been steady on natural
baits.
Black dmm have been
steady on just about any
piece of shell near channels.
Live shrimp under a popping
cork has taken limits dmm
in Bastrop, Trinity and West
Matagorda bays.
Six more weeks of win-
ter? Nah, I have confidence
in Phil.

It was the Lady Ganders
16th consecutive loss and
their 12th straight in 24-
4A play.
“That was self-inflict-
ed,” Gray said. “We had
too many mental lapses
in that game. Those re-
actions cost us two pos-
sessions and four free
throws. It boils down to
making good decisions.
We didn’t do that tonight.
And it’s not the first game
we haven’t.”
Senior guard Aishia
Adams, who is the lone
senior who played her last
game at Lee, received a
technical foul early in the
third quarter, following a
technical by teammate Ki-
erra Levan.
Gray said both fouls
were assessed arguing
with the officials about
possessions. For Adams,
she thought it was the end
of her career, losing count
of how many fouls she
had.

“I thought I had fouled
out,” Adams said. “I felt
like I let my teammates
down, but I was proud
of the young girls for not
giving up. They came out
and played hard.”
Gray agreed, adding
that if there is one posi-
tive he can take from this
game, it is the play of his
bench.
“I was pleased with
that,” he said. “Our top
two scorers were sitting
on the bench and the
younger kids still gave us
an opportunity to win the
game.”
Cami Tippin finished the
night with a team-high 13
points and Adams capped
her four-year career with
10. Levan finished with
five for the Lady Ganders.
Lee took an early 7-2
lead thanks to a hot start
by Adams, who sank
a spinning shot and a
3-pointer back-to-back.
The Lady Indians made
up ground in the second,
but it was in the third that
the visitors took full ad-
vantage.
Lee only scored two
points in a forgettable
third that saw the Lady
Indians build an 11-point
lead. It was too much to
overcome.
“We are looking for-
ward to the offseason,”
Gray said. “Our freshman
are sophomores now and
our sophomores are ju-
niors. We need to focus on
getting better.”
As for Adams, her off-
season is forever. She
said it hasn’t hit her yet,
but she added that she is
proud of her team’s effort
down the stretch.
“I feel it,” she said. “But
I am proud of the way we
played in these last two
games. It’s the best we
have played all year.
“We never gave up.”
