Coming off a 20-6 beating by the
Marlin Bulldogs, the Rosebud-Lott
Cougars seek their first 1974
victory when they entertain the
West Trojans tomorrow night at 8
p.m.
Last season, the Cougars invad-
ed Trojan Field and knocked off the
Trojans by a 27-3 count. In the two
teams' last Cougar Stadium meet-
ing, Rosebud-Lott prevailed 60-0.
Racking up a total of 263 yards,
the West Trojans defeated the

season opener for both teams
Friday night. September 6 at

tneir first posession, driving 73
yards in 14 plays. The drive

Doug Snokhous kept the Trojans
rolling in the second period,
capping a 51—yard drive as he
dived over from the one. The pass
for the extra point failed, and the
Trojans were ahead 13—0.
Connally came back late in thk
second quarter to close the gap to
13—8. Ronnie Higgs led the
Cadets on a 51—yard drive in
10 plays, capping it with a one-yard
run. He also ran for the extra point.
West and Connally exchanged
touchdowns in the third period.
West scored first when Larry
Sparks rambled through the line for
six yards and a TD. The pass for
the extra point failed, and the
Trojans led 19-8. Ronnie Higgs led
Connally on their last scoring drive
as he darted 11 yards for the score.
Their extra point also failed, and
the third period ended 19-14 in
favor of West.
The Trojans blew the Cadets off
the field in the final period as David
Snokhous bulled his way in from
the one. The try for the extra point
was true, and the Trojans led
27-14.
With 20 seconds left in the game
and Connally backed up to their
own end zone, a fourth down snap
on a punt attempt went astray and
bounced out of the end zone for a
West safety. This made the final
score West 29, Connally 14.
Larry Sparks led all rushes with
88 yards in 12 carries. Doug
Snokhous picked up 69 yards and
‘Basil Housewright 25. Connally’s

as he picked up 84 yards on the
ground. Ronnie Higgs ran for 43
yards and David Haines carried for

football games and district races.
This year the West Trojans are overwhelming favorites to win the
District 22-AA championship.
With 13 returning starters from a 5-4-1 1973 team, six of whom were
starters on the 1972 squad that won the bi-district championship, the
Trojans are far ahead of the other 22-AA schools in experience
Robinson s Rockets come to town Nov. 15 for the last game of the
season. That meeting with the Trojans, many believe, will decide who
represents the loop in the playoffs.
New to District 22AA are the Mart Panthers. Commenting on the
transition from 21AA, Coach Ed Burleson said, "We’re glad to get into
22AA. We know it won’t be an easier district, but teams here are much
more respected. They play better football. From this angle, the Panthers
should get third place.”
The McGregor Bulldogs are shooting for their third straight title. In
1972. the Bulldogs tied with West and Clifton.'later losing the coin flip. In
1973. McGregor captured the bi-district crown with nine victories, one
defeat, and two ties. This year, the "Dogs” have a new head coach and
have lost several starters, but they’re never an easy opponent for anyoe
and they could surprise.
Clifton's always tough Cubs are also under a new head coach, but that
diehard pigskin tradition will be something to watch for. Nov. 1. when the
Trojans visit Cub Stadium.
The Hillsboro Eagles round out the league.
Trojan head coach Derrell Carlile makes no bones about being picked as
the favorite. "If enough people pick you to win it. you usually do."
Consensus has it that Texas will win its seventh straight Southwest
Conference title, however, this writer disagrees. This scribe’s choice is
the last non-Longhorn team to win the host spot in the Cotton
Bowl--namely, Texas A&M.
Emory Bellard s building plans are finally materializing and with Ed
Simonini, an "Old pro" on defense, the Aggies should dethrone the
Orange clads.
Texas will finish second, Baylor third, Rice will be fourth, Texas Tech
fifth, Arkansas sixth, and SMU and TCU will bring up the rear.

Marquette star center Maurice Lucas has been declared ineligible by
the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The six-foot-eight Lucas was
drafted by the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association, but
Lucas, who is now in his junior year at Marquette, says he wants to play
for the Warriors. 1974 runners-up at the NCAA Basketball Tournament,
and has enrolled at the university. He never signed with the Bulls.
This is another incident which points out the stubbornness of the
NCAA. Why restrict a person from playing college basketball because he
only considered turning professional? Since when does a Dlaver become
professional simply because he was drafted by a pro club?
Red carpeting put down by the
girls themselves and a stereo
donated by James Cook of Radio
City, Waco, are new features of the
dressing room used by the
Trojanettes.
The school colors have been used
to decorate the enclosed area
designated for the girl athletes.
Dressing benches are solid red with
white lettering spelling out the
words ’’varsity" and "junior
varsity."
“Now the girls have a private
dressing room that rates near the
top of the district, we’re very proud
of it.” commented coach Jackie
Gilbert.
