way says the greatest
pleasure in life, now that
he’s retired and has all kinds
of spare time, is not
watching TV. Whenever he
gets depressed he just
thinks about all the
worthless programs he isn’t
watching. / His favorite be-
sure-to-miss programs in-
clude “One Day At a Time,"
where the actors shrill and
yell at each other in the
place of comedy - and we
are glad they live in Indiana;
“Different Strokes’’ where
the young star’i major
problem each week seems
to be eating too much jello;
“Dallas" which would make
great propaganda for the
Communists and bears
about as much truth for the
life of a very wealthy Teas
family as the Reagan tax
plan does to balancing the
budget; and “Alice” where
the health department
should have declared a red
alert years ago. Emfl says
he does like to watch
“Barney Miller" for reasons
he doesn’t understand and
“Hee Haw” because it
doesn’t pretend to be
anything but dumb. Told
that a new season is coming
to TV land, Vidal said he’d
like to see a “Battle ofthe
Network Non-viewers"
where contestants could sug-
gest good program ideas
like the old “Whiz Kids, In-
formation Please, Mr.
Keene, Tracer of Lost
Persons," and “Phil
Spitalney and His All Girl
Orchestra” that were hot in
1945. Every ’45 program
that got cancelled would get
a network president dunked
in a vat of Velveta cheese.
