VA to compensate
former POWs with
ischemic heart disease
According to Ken Jones,
Veterans County Service Officer
for Collin County, Secretary of
Veterans Affairs Jesse Brown
recently announced final approval
of a regulation that provides com-
pensation to former prisoners of
war who develop ischemic heart
disease and who had in service a
nutritional deprivation which
caused wet beriberi.
Brown had called for the award
of disability compensation last year
following the report of a 1992
National Academy of Sciences
study that a “noteworthy” relation-
ship exists between edema resulting
from beriberi during captivity and
ischemic heart disease occurring
later in the lives of former l’( )Ws.
Since passage of Public Law 91-
376 in 1970, VA has presumed ser-
vice connection for beriberi,
including beriberi heart disease, in
former POWs.
Beriberi is a nutritional disorder.
resulting from a deficiency of vita-
min B-l (thiamine). It is more com-
mon turning individuals who were
POWs in die Pacific and in areas in
which white (polished) rice is die
staple food. The nutritional depri-
vation causes what is commonly
called wet beriberi. It is character-
ized by an accumulation of tissue
fluid (edema) and may result in
ischemic heart disease in former
K)Ws.
VA will attempt to contact all
former POWs on its disability rolls
and has asked for the assistance of
veterans service organizations to
help locate any veterans who may
be affected by this action. Former
POWs may obtain more informa-
tion about filing a claim for this
and other diseases related to captiv-
ity by calling toll-free on die TVC
CSO Wats Line or at 1-800-827-
1000 to reach the nearest VA
Regional Office.

THE VERSATILE
CROWN
(J. For what dental conditions
are crowns recommended and
what are their advantages?
A. Fitting a crown is often a
preferred way to strengthen a
tooth, improve appearance or
support replacement teeth.
Made of very durable material
whose color matches existing
teeth, a crown covers a tooth
and is not distinguishable from
natural teeth. Among methods
of improving the appearance of
n. sshapen or discolored teelh.
it is the most long-lasting.
Crowns may be recommended
to preserve teeth weakened by a
crack or by decay. When one or
more missing teelh are to be
replaced, a bridge is anchored
to crowns on each side of the
gap.
Preparation of a crown usually
takes two visits. First, the tooth
is trimmed to accept a crown
and the dentist makes an
impression as a model for pre-
cise fabrication of die crown.
At the next visit, after checking
biting and chewing, die crown
may be trimmed before it is
permanently installed. Result:
New tooth strength and a new,
satisfying look.
