an en-

(gas handed far houae floor ac-
tion today.
The jtrqpowtl which would
"quire approval of voters if
opted by the House, would
ell the veterans land fund to
100,000,000 when added on
current $25,000,000 fund
Itabllshed in 1949.
i The measure, sponsored by
ftep. Cloyd Young of Linden,
has the support of Land Com-
missloner Bascom Giles who
Would have the job of adminis-
tering the enlarged program.
Giles testified at earlier com-
mittee hearings that the orig-
inal sum voted was exhausted
Within a short period and that
the veterans land board had
been “swamped” with applica-
tions.
Once the land proposal is out
of the way. House members
were expected to turn their at-
tention to the more controver-
sial railroad-trucker fight.

which woyM require officers to
crack down on violators of pres-
ent load limits. Under Lindsey’s
proposal, overloaded trucks
would have to be unloaded to
meet legal requirements on the
spot.
Lindsey yesterday declared it
is "necessary to take the pro-,
fit out of overloading” and that
“people are clamoring for some
way to enforce the truck load
law because oi the detriment to
highways t *um overloaded
trucks.”
Other action taken by the
legislature included:
1. A bill which would re-
quire motorists to prove pay-

Flash Of Atomic
Test Is Visible
In Four States
I.AS VEGAS, New <1 (UP)—A
mighty atomic explosion, the
fifth to be set off at the French-
man Flat testing rounds 100
miles northwest of here, rocked
this resort city today anil lighted
it with a brilliance many times
brighter than that of the sun.
Two members of the Atomic
Energy Commission: and a group
of military weapons experts wit-
nessed the rumbling set off
in die mountain-rimmed 5,000
square-mile testing grounds at
about 7:17 a. in. (CST).
The flash was seen in Los An-
geles and was caught on the
screens of television ests tuned
to two Los Angeles stations. It
was the firm time in history
that an atomic blast was tele-
vised.
Sound waves from Friday’s
explosion —- the fourth set off
ince the A EC started testing
atomic weapon, near here .Ian.
27—broke a \\ indow in a furni-
ture store here and residents
were warned Sunday to stay
away from w indows to avoid in-
jury from falling gla-s.
All blasts have occurred short-
ly before G a. in., and many resi-
dents heeded the warning by put-
ting on their bathrobes and ap-
pearing on their lawns at the
customary hour to watch the
brilliant, blazing orange and hear
the window-rattling concussion.
The flash oi light ha.-, been
-een in four states — California,
i i'tah. Nevada and Arizona—and
1 as far away as 400 miles from
j the proving grounds.
Other than to confirm that the
i detonation was one of its “period-
| if tests” for the development of
atomic weapon.-, the AEC refus-
er! further comment.
