Crime Cost Now
Near 17 Billion
NEW ORLEANS, (UP) —
Chairman Estes Kefauver of the
senate crime investigating com-
mittee saiil here that organiz-
ed crime costs the United State
at least $17,000,000,000 a year,
more than all national defense
costs in 1017 and 1918.
And he said nothing will slop
organized crime — which ap-
parently work, by associations,
cooperation and mutual assi i
aneo rather than a a master or-
ganization — except special legi-■
iation.
"We feel that we (the com
ivdrtoe) have uecomnlishod this
much: We have put a lot of
SLuniuling blocks in the way of
organized gambling and we hope
ihat local law enforcement ag-
encies will lake full advantage
of (he facts that we have learn-
ed and the evidence we have
brought, out in hearings,” he
said.
