Loss To Calallen; Sinton Next
Taft’s Greyhounds,
seemingly in charge of
yesterday’s baseball game
with the Calaiien Wildcats, saw
their defense fail in the final
inning, and Calaiien won the
District 1.V3A game, 7-4.
The; Wildcats scared three
unearned runs in the seventh to
wrap up the win. Dennis Goins,
who pitched a two-hitter
against West Oso his last time

one a home run by Calallen’s
Steve Robeau in the fourth
Later that inning he gave up
the other
Taft erased a 1-0 Calallen
lead in the third with three
runs. Andy Vasquez singled in
one run. and Demetro followed
that with two more runs-
batted-in.
The two runs m the fourth
tied it for the Wildcats, who are
now 1-0 in district play, but
Taft came back with a run in
the bottom of that inning on a
single, sacrifice, and another
single.
An unearned run in the sixth
tied Ihe game at 4-4 and loose
base-running on the part of
Taft might have cost a chance
for a go-ahead run in the
bottom of the sixth.
Taft took its first district
loss, and is now 1-1, with ever-
tough Sinton coming up Friday
at Sinton. George Montez or
Wes Ritchie, both sophomores,
will be the starting pitcher.
Isaias Gonzalez, Billy
Jalomo and Vasquez got two
hits each for the Greyhounds,
who are 1-4 for the season
Goins struck out ten Wildcats

Taft won the junior varsity
division of the "Toast of the
Coast Relays" Saturday with
148 points The meet was
hosted by Rockport hut was
held at Gregory Portland
because of the wet weather.
Gregory Portland followed
Taft with 135 points and had led
throughout the meet until Taft
placed first and fourth in the
mile run to take a one point
lead The mile relay was won
by Taft while Gregory-
Portland placed fourth.
Th" junior varsity division
was composed of freshman and
sophomore fracksters and 7aft
used most of its sophomores in
this division.
Other schools and their point
totals were Beeville 87!v,
Bishop 46 West Oso 42. Sinton
29. Flour Bluff 26, Calallen 18,
Rockport 15. Refugio 11*2, and
Aransas Pass 0

relay set a meet record of 45 8
in the preliminaries and won
the event in 46 flat This relay
was composed of four
sophomores - Trey Threadgill,
Ronnie Goins, Steve Tijerina,
and Isaias Gonzalez
Tijerina and Gonzalez
teamed with sophomores
Jimmy Blair and freshman
Nicky Lockard to set a meet
record of 3:44.8 in the mile
relay.

Driver Gets 11 Of Taft’s 15 Points

The Taft Greyhounds, minus
the services of most of their
sophomores who ran in the
junior varsity division, scored
only 15 points to place ninth in
the "Toast of the Coast
Relays" held at Gregory
Portland but hosted by Rock-
port .
Gregory Portland easily won
the meet with 174 points and
was trailed in order by Refugio
85. Beeville 82, Sinton 78,
Calallen 43. Aransas Pass 30.
Rockport and West Oso 22, Taft
15, Bishop 5, and Flour Bluff 0.
For the Hounds, Vanzant
Driver scored tl of the 15
points as he placed third in the
120-yard high hurdles in a
season best of 15-flat, was
fourth in the 330-yard in
termediate hurdles in 43 4, and
ran a leg on the fifth place mile
relay.
