Summer TAAS. TEAMS test dates set
Dates for the exit level summer
test administration dates for the
Texas Assessment of Academic
Skills (TAAS) and Texas Educa-
tional Assessment of Minimum
Skills (TEAMS) have been set.
TAAS testing dates are July 12
(writing), July 13 (reading), and July
14 (mathematics). TEAMS testing
dates are July 13 (English language
arts) and July 14 (mathematics).
Enrolled students and out-of-
school examinees who have not met
minimum expectations on all
sections of either the TAAS or
TEAMS tests may retake the
necessary sections.
Although no formal registration
process is required for most TAAS
examinees, out-of-school examinees
and enrolled students who wish to
test at a site other than their home
district must register. Students who
were enrolled in grade 12 in the
spring of 1994 are considered
enrolled students, not out-of-school
examinees. All TEAMS examinees,
whether enrolled or out of school,
must register.
Examinees may pick up a
registration packet at any high
school campus, district central
office, or education service center.
The test registration form must he
completed and returned in the pre-
addressed envelope and must be
received in Iowa City, Iowa, no later
than 5 p.m., June 10,1994.
The Texas Education Agency and
National Computer Systems will not
be responsible for registration forms
that are delayed or lost in the mail.
Questions concerning the summer
exit level test should be directed to
the Texas Education Agency,
Division of Student Assessment,
(512)463-9536.

“CAN A BEE STING KILL YOU IF YOU ARE
ALLERGIC TO THEM?”
“YES! THEY SURELY CAN!” Sometimes death can be prevented only
by the very timely use of medicine.
There are kits of adrenalin (epinephrine) filled syringes for patients who
are highly allergic to bee stings (and other things). These should be
injected by the patient soon after the exposure.
However, there is a faster and more effective way....using asthma
inhalers, Asmanephrin or Primatene mist. Neither require a prescription.
Some patients with allergic reactions, however, get severely ill and
must be taken to the emergency department. Here they are given
intravenous fluids to prevent blood pressures from dropping to shock
levels.
For those patients whose allergic reaction is caused by a food, activated
charcoal is given by mouth.
Benadryl by mouth or injection is also useful. It is of little use for the
severe immediate allergic reactions, but helps prevent the later damages of
allergy.
Tagamet, the drug widely used with great success for peptic ulcer
disease, is an antihistamine useful also in allergic reactions. The more
severe reactions require intravenous Tagamet. It can be used orally also
for long term allergic skin diseases such as eczema.
Another warning for patients with a history of severe allergy: Beta-
Blockers, (there are many of them), drugs used for high blood pressure and
heart disease, can block the effect of life saving Adrenalin in patients
suffering from allergic reactions. -T.M. Trimble, M.D.
